    LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of Wildlife exists to provide wise stewardship of Louisiana's wildlife and associated habitats and increase wildlife conservation awareness.

    BIOLOGIST SUPERVISOR/ ALLIGATOR PROGRAM

    This position will serve as Biologist Supervisor in the Alligator Management Program. The incumbent would receive direct supervision from a Biologist Manager, and indirect supervision from a Biologist Program Manager and higher-level administrators. The incumbent of this position would directly supervise the work of a Wildlife and Fisheries Technician Supervisor and an Administrative Program Specialist. The incumbent would direct their efforts on all aspects of conducting hide inspections and farm releases throughout the state. The incumbent would also coordinate the issuing of alligator wild harvest tags and licenses for the Baton Rouge and New Orleans Zones and alligator parts dealer licenses statewide.

    Minimum Qualifications

    A bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus four years of experience in wildlife or fisheries, forestry, or environmental science; OR

    A non-thesis master's degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus three years of the required specialized experience; OR

    A master's degree with a completed thesis or a doctorate in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus two years of the required specialized experience.

    Job Duties and Other Information

    JOB DUTIES

    Duties may include some or all of the following:

    80 % Management, Research, and Extension Activities

    + Assist Biologist Managers and Biologist Program Manager in establishing annual statewide alligator tag and egg quotas for annual alligator and egg harvest seasons by processing alligator hunting and egg collection applications.

    + Supervise the efforts of Wildlife and Fisheries Technician and Administrative Program Specialist on the statewide scheduling of hide inspections, farm releases, and collection and reporting of the data associated with the projects.

    + Coordinate the preparation and issuing of alligator harvest licenses and tags in the Baton Rouge and New Orleans zones.

    + Responsible for all aspects of issuing alligator part dealer licenses statewide.

    + Make technical recommendations and provide guidance to landowners, land managers, farmers and trappers regarding wild alligator and egg harvests.

    + As necessary, participate as part of a crew to travel to alligator farms statewide to administer the return of the required number of alligators to the wild and/or inspect alligator hides and/or live alligators for out-of-state shipment.

    + Provide direction and assistance to Wildlife and Fisheries Technician Supervisor and lower level field staff with the scheduling and collecting of harvest data from alligators taken during the wild alligator harvest season.

    + Assist in monitoring alligator egg harvest programs on WMAs.

    + As necessary, conduct alligator farm and exhibit facility inspections to ensure compliance with alligator regulations.

    + Assist with administering the statewide nuisance alligator program for the Baton Rouge office.

    + As necessary, represent the Department at public forums.

    + Write and proof technical and non-technical articles and correspondence relating to alligator programs.

    + As necessary, assist other personnel in environmental or biological data collection relating to alligator programs.

    + Maintain computers and other equipment and supplies needed to perform before mentioned duties.

    15 % Administrative Duties

    + Procure/request necessary equipment for work unit as needed.

    + Review and approve administrative reports (work plans, time requests, travel authorizations, etc.) from direct reports.

    + Make recommendations and provide information for program policy and budget development.

    + Prepare various reports, correspondence, time sheets, expense forms, invoices, purchase orders, etc.

    + Attend necessary meetings, conferences and workshops and complete necessary continuing education/training.

    + As necessary, help train personnel in various project areas.

    + Participate in interview panels for prospective staff.

    5 % Other duties as assigned

    POSITION- SPECIFIC DETAILS:

    Appointment Type:Promotional. This position is open only to permanent employees of Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

     

    If filled as a job appointment, there is a possibility that this position may be converted to a probational appointment should funding become available. Current permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if selected.
