    Custodial Assistant - Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY

    GENERAL DUTIES

    Under supervision, performs work of ordinary difficulty in cleaning public buildings and their immediate grounds; performs related light labor.

     

    There is no Assignment Level for this position. All personnel perform related work. This specification describes typical assignments; related duties may be assigned as needed.

     

    - Sweeps, damp mops, and wet mops office floors, toilets, corridors, lobbies, and other assigned floor areas.

     

    - Cleans washbasins and other toilet room facilities.

     

    - Washes walls by hand with a brush or by using an electric machine.

     

    - Scrubs floors with an electric machine; waxes and polishes floors.

     

    - Hand scrubs stairs and stair landings.

     

    - Empties waste basket and disposes of refuse.

     

    - Vacuums and cleans rugs, carpets, and upholstered furniture.

     

    - Dusts and removes and cleans window coverings such as blinds.

     

    - Performs shoulder high dusting of walls.

     

    - Dusts and polishes furniture and metal work.

     

    - Cleans mirrors and glass in bookcase, doors, and restrooms.

     

    - Washes electric light fixtures.

     

    - Replenishes bathroom supplies in toilets.

     

    - Sweeps sidewalks and removes snow from sidewalks; washes sidewalks and lower portion of buildings with brush and hose.

     

    - Replaces bulbs and fuses.

     

    - Attends a low pressure heating plant.

     

    - May occasionally operate an elevator, move furniture, or act as watch person.

     

    - Reports broken equipment.

     

    - Observes safety and environmental health precautions as directed.

     

    - Puts up safety warnings and/or stanchions for wet floors or other areas for limited access during cleaning.

     

    - Sorts refuse for recycling.

     

    - Cleans small kitchens and/or coffee service areas.

    CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

    The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.

     

    As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Social Journalism.

     

    This position reports to the Director of Campus Services. The position is designated as essential personnel and requires the incumbent to work in person.

    In addition to the general duties, under supervision, the Custodial Assistant duties include but are not limited to:

    - Replenishes and distributes beverages to classrooms, offices and common areas at the school

     

    for meetings and special events.

     

    - Cleans up after events, including labeling and placing leftover food in the refrigerator.

     

    - Occasionally moves items to and from the basement; such as furniture, surplus marketing materials, maintenance materials, items used for special events, or items awaiting disposal as needed.

     

    - Assists with moving delivery items from one floor to another.

     

    - Assists with providing space for storage for the school food pantry and general upkeep of that space. Occasionally help transport food pantry items to the point of distribution.

     

    - Performs other related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    There are no formal education or experience requirements.

     

    There are certain medical and physical requirements as established by University management.

    OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

    A preferred candidate should have:

     

    - The ability to work evenings and weekends.

     

    Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will not be offered for this position.

    COMPENSATION

    New Hire Rate: $39,922*

    Incumbent Rate: $41,163

    ** This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only
