The Staff Counselor role at SUNY Geneseo exists to provide support, consultation, and therapy to SUNY Geneseo students during the academic year. It also exists to educate the campus community about students’ mental health needs and how supporting student’s mental health should be a campus-wide effort.
As a Staff Counselor, you will provide brief therapy to SUNY Geneseo students, perform assessments and crisis intervention, facilitate group sessions, and serve as a consultant to the Geneseo community. You will collaborate with student groups and make a concerted effort to offer counseling services to students from diverse backgrounds.
Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
+ Completion of Masters level counseling, psychology, or social work program
+ NYS license or license eligible (Psychologist, LCSW , LCSW -R, LMHC , LMSW , LCAT , LMFT )
+ Previous experience working with diverse client populations and a demonstrated desire to work with and be inclusive toward diverse students, faculty, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Previous experience as a counselor
+ Experience working with college students
+ Evidence of a strong record of clinical skills, therapeutic treatment, and crisis interventions
License/Certification
Active, unrestricted New York State license or license eligible
Other Skills Required
Previous experience using an Electronic Medical Record system
Computer skills including Microsoft Office, and proficient typing skills
Supervision Received
The staff counselor reports to the Director of Counseling. Weekly supervision will be provided until counselor is fully licensed, then frequency moves to bi-weekly supervision.
Supervision Exercised
There is potential for this position to clinically supervise one or more practicum students or interns during the academic year if appropriately licensed.

Function 1: Therapy & Mental Status Assessments
+ Provide brief individual and group psychotherapy and crisis intervention to SUNY Geneseo students.
+ Conduct mental status assessments and make recommendations regarding students’ substance use and psychological welfare.
+ Keep accurate and current records of all activities, including clinical records.

Function 2: Consultations, Programming & Training
+ Provide mental health consultation to members of the College community upon request and facilitate the development of intra-institutional and community relationships.
+ Develop and implement preventive, educational and outreach programming with students, staff and faculty.
+ Provide skills training to members of the community, both informally for individuals and in a formal manner for staff, faculty and students.
+ Provide off-hours, on-call response as necessary to provide student assistance and support in case of individual student or campus-wide emergencies.

Function 3: Department & Campus Participation
+ Attend weekly case management meetings to review and provide insight about clients of concern.
+ Attend monthly Student Health and Counseling meetings as well as Student and Campus Life staff meetings.
+ Collaborate with other colleagues in Student Health and Counseling Services, as needed, concerning mental health care needs of shared students.
+ Participate in educational outreach activities to other College offices as needed.
+ Participate in educational programs for staff and trainees.
+ Participate in performance improvement including quality assurance, incident review, and peer review activities.
+ Participate in continuing accreditation readiness activities as needed.
+ Provide supervision to one or more practicum students
