    THE POSITION

    Are you passionate about safeguarding public health and advancing scientific research for the Commonwealth? The Pennsylvania Department of Health, specifically the Division of Virology and Immunology, is seeking a dedicated and proactive Microbiologist 3 to lead a new wastewater surveillance testing initiative within the Bureau of Laboratories.     DESCRIPTION OF WORK

    As a Microbiologist 3, you will lead a team focused on molecular virology, employing real-time and digital polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques alongside immunology testing to identify infectious diseases of public health concern, such as SARS-CoV-2, in both clinical and environmental samples, including wastewater surveillance. Your role will involve the implementation and assessment of new diagnostic and surveillance methods to evaluate their effectiveness and appropriateness for the laboratory. Additionally, you will be responsible for overseeing quality assurance, proficiency testing, and ensuring compliance with CLIA regulations.

    Work Schedule and Additional Information:

    + Full-time employment

    + Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday

    + Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

    + One year as a Microbiologist 2 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration);or

    + Two years of professional laboratory work experience in microbiology, and a bachelor’s degree that includes 20 credits of microbiology, cellular biology, molecular biology or bacteriology and 12 credits in chemistry or biochemistry;or

    + One year of professional laboratory work experience in microbiology, and a graduate degree in microbiology.
