    Qualifications

    1) A preference for a person of three (3) years of successful experience as a school social worker or equivalent private sector experience.

     

    2) A Master's degree in school social work.

     

    3) Valid New York State certification as a Social Worker.

     

    4) Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

     

    Reports To

     

    1) Director of Special Services and Building Administrator where assigned.

     

    2) Works in a staff relationship with Building Administration as well as instructional and support personnel.

     

    Director of the Family Support Center

     

    General

     

    1) The Director of the Family Support Center oversees all daily operations of the Center and ensures that students and families receive coordinated support services that promote student well being, school engagement, and academic success.

     

    2) The Director develops, implements, and monitors programs that strengthen the connection between home, school, and community, and works to remove non academic barriers that interfere with student learning.

     

    3) The Director provides leadership to Family Support Center staff and ensures that services are aligned with district goals and in compliance with state and federal regulations.

     

    4) Serves as a liaison between school district personnel, community agencies, and families to ensure timely communication, appropriate referrals, and coordinated intervention planning.

     

    Specific

     

    1) Program Leadership

     

    + Oversees the daily operation of the Family Support Center including scheduling services, supervising staff, and monitoring program activities.

    + Develops and implements protocols for intake, assessment, service delivery, and follow up for students and families.

    + Ensures that all Family Support Center practices reflect trauma informed approaches and are aligned with district policies and procedures.

    + Collaborates with district administrators to expand services, strengthen programs, and address emerging needs within the school community.

    + Prepares reports, data summaries, and program evaluations for district leadership as requested.

     

    2) Coordination with School Personnel

     

    + Works closely with administrators, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and teachers to coordinate support plans for students and families.

    + Participates in meetings related to student services including building level teams, CSE meetings when appropriate, and crisis response teams.

    + Provides consultation to school personnel regarding family engagement, mental health concerns, community resources, and non academic barriers to student success.

    + Supports staff in understanding the role of the Family Support Center and the referral process.

     

    3) Family Engagement and Casework

     

    + Oversees and provides direct casework services to families as needed including short term counseling, crisis intervention, and referral to community resources.

    + Assists families in identifying challenges affecting their child's school performance and collaborates with them to develop action plans that promote consistency between home and school.

    + Ensures that families receive support in navigating services such as housing, mental health providers, food assistance, transportation, and other community supports.

    + Maintains accurate and confidential records of all Family Support Center interactions and ensures compliance with all legal requirements.

     

    4) Community Partnerships

     

    + Develops and maintains strong relationships with local agencies, service providers, and community organizations to expand available resources for students and families.

    + Coordinates referrals to community agencies and ensures appropriate follow up and communication with school personnel.

    + Identifies gaps in community resources and collaborates with district and community partners to address unmet needs.

     

    5) Other Duties

     

    + Keeps informed of current trends and best practices related to family engagement, mental health, community schools, and social work.

    + Plans and facilitates parent workshops, family events, and community outreach activities that support student well being and school connectedness.

    + Provides professional development to staff on topics related to family dynamics, trauma informed practice, and addressing non academic barriers to learning.

    + Assists in crisis response situations when necessary and helps coordinate supports for affected students and families.

    + Prepares an annual report of Family Support Center activities and outcomes for the Director of Special Services.

     

    Performs other related responsibilities as assigned by district administration.

     

    General, Social Worker

     

    1) The school social worker serves as a liaison among the home, school and community. Activity is directed toward those students whose academic or behavior difficulties impair their learning.

     

    2) The school social worker is responsible for direct casework with students and parents or person(s) in parental relationship.

     

    3) Consults with school personnel and acts as a referral source to and liaison with community agencies.

     

    4) Implements the referral procedure as directed by the Director of Special Services and/or building administrator.

     

    Specific

     

    1) Casework

     

    + Works closely with administrators, teachers and support personnel in making provision for the optimal education of all students.

    + Consults with appropriate school personnel about referrals before and after contact with student, or parent or person(s) in parental relationship.

    + Supplements the information contained on each referral by reviewing the cumulative folder and health record of the student. Discusses information with the writer of the referral. The social worker may observe the student in the classroom when advisable.

    + Collects pertinent and appropriate information about the student and his/her home environment.

    + Interprets the aims, objectives and procedures of the school, and assists in establishing a close, cooperative relationship between the home and the school.

    + Interprets to the parents or person(s) in parental relationship their responsibilities for the student's proper development and adjustment to school program.

    + Assists the parents or person(s) in parental relationship in identifying factors interfering with the student's effective use of the school programs.

    + Advises the family on financial, health, or other matters which may be interfering with the best development of the student.

    + Increases the understanding of the parents or person(s) in parental relationship in their constructive and consistent participation. Recommends their use of appropriate community resources.

    + Carries on casework with the individual student to assist in the improvement of personal, social, or emotional adjustment and to develop an attitude of responsible self direction in school and community life.

    + Maintains appropriate records and reports of contact with parents or person(s) in parental relationship and students.

     

    2) Community Agencies

     

    + Maintains contact with community agencies.

    + Assists in the referral process to the appropriate agency.

    + Provides follow-up where advisable and keeps appropriate school personnel informed.

     

    3) Other Duties

     

    + Has a good working knowledge of law as it pertains to minors and confidentiality.

    + Assists in the reporting of suspected cases of child abuse/neglect.

    + Provides direct counseling to parents or person(s) in parental relationship (usually short term), as needed, in relation to school problems.

    + Prepares written and oral presentations as requested (community groups, PTO).

    + Attends meetings as required (faculty, CSE).

    + Keeps informed of the current educational trends and practices in this area.

    + Assists school psychologist in completion of social history of referred students.

    + Prepares an annual report for the Director of Special Services.

    + Works cooperatively between buildings.
