Summary
This position is for a mechanical engineer within the Duke Energy License Renewal Project Team. The candidate will become an integral member of a diverse technical team pursuing renewed operating licenses for the Duke Energy nuclear fleet. Renewed licenses provide up to 20 years of additional plant operation and are a critical strategic element of Duke Energy’s Carolina Resource Plan. The Plan outlines how the company will power unprecedented growth across the Carolinas while protecting reliability and keeping customer costs as low as possible. Renewing a license requires applying to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), supporting NRC review, and following approved methods to manage aging of plant components for safe long-term operation. This position is ideal for someone interested in making a positive and powerful impact across the Carolinas.
As a member of the License Renewal Team, the candidate will perform and support a variety of technical and engineering activities needed to successfully renew a plant’s license. These activities include analyzing various component materials and system operating environments to determine potential aging effects and developing/implementing strategies to detect and manage the aging effects throughout the life of the plants. This position is focused on, but not limited to, Class 1 system and component analyses of the Reactor Coolant System, Reactor Vessel, Reactor Vessel Internals, and Steam Generator. Knowledge of or experience with Class 1 materials issues such as cumulative fatigue damage, loss of fracture toughness due to neutron irradiation embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking, and aging of reactor vessel internals is highly desirable, but not required.
Engineer I and Engineer II are the entry level and intermediate levels of the Engineering classification hierarchy, respectively. Employees at these levels solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills and the ability to work with independence. They have knowledge of and apply fundamental concepts and procedures.
The location for this position is the McGuire Nuclear Station Office Complex in Huntersville, NC. This position offers a 4-day, 10-hour per day workweek with a hybrid work classification consisting of at least 2 days per week in the office following an initial in-office onboarding period.
