    Make an Impact Where Water Meets the Road

     

    Are you detail-oriented, organized, and skilled at navigating complex regulations? The Iowa DOT is looking for aTransportation Planner 1 (TP1)to join ourWater Resources Sectionwithin theLocation and Environment Bureau (LEB). In this role, you’ll play a key part in ensuring that transportation projects meet all applicable environmental and water-related regulatory requirements.

     

    This isn’t just a desk job—you’ll split your time between the office and the field. Whether your reviewing plans, writing permit applications, or conducting on-site assessments, your work will help ensure projects stay compliant with environmental regulations – while keeping schedules on track and budgets in check.

    What this position is all about:

    + Ensure compliance– Interpret and apply federal and state water resource regulations (e.g., Clean Water Act Sections 401/404) to transportation projects.

    + Analyze and advise– Use desktop and field data to support “no net loss” of aquatic resources during transportation project delivery.

    + Collaborate across disciplines– Work with engineers, planners, and environmental experts to align infrastructure with environmental goals.

    + Navigate regulations– Support permitting, documentation, and compliance with state and federal water resource laws.

    What we’re looking for:

    + Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.

    + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

    + Initiative and motivation.

    + A passion for public service.

    What would make you stand out from all the rest:

    + Experience with NEPA or the Clean Water Act (401/404).

    + Familiarity with GIS and/or CAD.

    + Experience with field data collection methods and GPS equipment.

    + Relevant experience with environmental permitting.

    6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both that encompasses the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of surface and ground water resources including the following:

    + Surface water hydrology

    + Ground water hydrology

    + Hydraulics

    + Water resources engineering

    + Natural resources conservation engineering

    + Water supply engineering

    + Water quality engineering

    + Erosion and sediment transport

    + Surface or ground water chemistry

    + Watershed dynamics

    + Limnology

    + Stream or wetland ecology

     

    The Water Resources selective is distinct from the Water Supply, Waste Water, Water Quality, and Chemistry selectives in that the Water Resources selective applies to the management, engineering, and quality analysis of surface and groundwater resources in the natural environment rather than the processing of water in a waste water or drinking water treatment plant or the analysis of water samples in a laboratory

     

    Minimum Qualification Requirements

    Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

    1) Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering, finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, aviation (technology, management, or flight operations), or transportation planning.

     

    2) A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience, where one year of full-time work experience in civil/transportation/traffic engineering, environmental engineering, finance, business administration, supply chain management, data science, geography, economics, mathematics, community development planning, regional planning, urban planning, aviation (technology, management, or flight operations), or transportation planning equals thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work (as described in number one).
