    About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

    The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

    Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):

    Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

    Role Overview:

    This position exists within the Information Services division of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. The position reports to either the Data Operations manager or the Maintenance & Operations manager.

     

    The purpose of the position is to effectively use all IOT and IS tools and resources available to improve IDEM system quality by ensuring that systems and information sources are in compliance with all state and federal regulations, rules and code while incorporating innovative approaches to solving problems.

     

    This position works as an environmental intern on data operations or management & operations related projects supporting the division. This position will be researching and preparing various reports for supervisor, generating and maintaining data, conducting inspections, typing documents/ maintaining files, preparing and researching of various documents, responding to agency requests for reports and information pertaining to various information services activities. This position coordinates with various stakeholder and IDEM staff, administrative staff, and other professional staff in the branch and office.

    Hourly Rate:

    The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

    Essential Job Responsibilties:

    The essential functions of this role are as follows:

    + Assists with transferring raw data to the appropriate location for use in data analysis projects.

    + Utilizes existing documentation and guidance from senior staff to wrangle, clean, and validate agency data sources.

    + Contributes to general analysis of agency datasets.

    + Examine and update contents of Archer ISI system to improve accuracy and reflect latest system descriptions

    + Structures documentation for analysis, step-by-step guides and internal knowledge repository

    + Devise improvements to current test procedures and develop models of possible future configurations.

    + Conducts data quality checks to ensure the validity and cleanliness of agency datasets prior to their use in analysis and reporting.

    + Interprets data and from multiple sources using a variety of analytical techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation to data mining, to supporting statistical methodologies.

    + Develops compelling data visualizations to communicate findings to target audience(s).

    + Adheres to HIPAA, PII, PHI and other state statutes concerned with protecting data confidentiality and individual privacy.

    Preferred Experience:

    To be eligible for an internship, applicants must be enrolled as undergraduates or graduates in an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed one year of undergraduate education at the start of the internship.

    Requirements:

    + Use knowledge of environmental health sciences, public and environmental health, environmental protection principles and practices.

    + Gather necessary compliance and enforcement inforamtion and complete a final report on activities.

    + Excellent written and oral communication skills preferred.

    + Ability to use databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.

    + Effective planning and organizational skills.

    + Ability to work independently.

    Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

    This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
