About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
The purpose for this position is to collect GPS data groundwater monitoring wells, explosive gas probes, and piezometers located at Land Disposal Units throughout Indiana (field work), resolve issues with Electronic Data File (EDF) data from groundwater monitoring wells, explosive gas probes, and piezometers located at Land Disposal Units; and research IDEM geology/groundwater/explosive gas records found in IDEM hard copy files to be downloaded into VFC. Work is for the Permits Branch, Geology Section.
Hourly Rate:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
Essential Job Responsibilties:
The essential duties and responsibilities of the intern are to perform the following:
• Research IDEM geology/groundwater/explosive gas records found in IDEM hard copy files to be downloaded into VFC.
• Become familiar with the EDF downloading process. Run the EDF tool to download data into OLQ’s SampDB
• Collect GPS Data at monitoring wells, explosive gas probes, and piezometers throughout Indiana
Preferred Experience:
To be eligible for an internship, applicants must be enrolled as undergraduates or graduates in an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed one year of undergraduate education at the start of the internship.
Requirements:
The incumbent should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
• Valid Drivers License
• Enrolled in a geology program.
• Ability to walk and drive long distances
• Working knowledge of personal computers and software such as Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Outlook
• Ability to utilize the internet for research purposes and agency databases documenting results
• Ability to review and evaluate technical reports and data
• Good written and verbal communication skills
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
