    Role Overview:

    This position will lead the Food is Medicine (FIM) team within the Indiana Department of Health Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity (DNPA). The incumbent will spearhead statewide strategies that integrate nutrition into healthcare and community systems, advancing food security and improving health outcomes across Indiana. The Director will also lead efforts to secure federal, state, private, and philanthropic funding, ensuring long-term sustainability of FIM programs. As a thought leader, the incumbent will provide technical assistance, shape program design, and strengthen pathways to sustainability while representing Indiana at the national level.

    Salary Statement:

    The salary for this position traditionally starts at $67,314.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

     

    A Day in the Life:

    The essential functions of this role are as follows:

    + Establishes, monitors, and implements long-range objectives and specifies the strategies, KPIs, and actions to achieve them for a public health program.

    + Analyzes operations to evaluate performance of the specific public health program or its staff in meeting objectives or to determine areas of potential cost reduction, program improvement, or policy change.

    + Interprets and explains in-depth and complex public health policies, rules, regulations, or laws to organizations, government or corporate officials, or individuals.

    + Develops and implements corrective action plans to solve organizational or departmental problems.

    + Prepares and presents public health reports for approval, including those for funding or implementation of services to executive leadership.

    + Develops and oversees public health program financial or budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments, or increase efficiency.

    + Develops and monitors public health program requirements to ensure it meets federal and state policies and grants compliance.

    + Develops and supervises training of employees and consultants on public health program requirements and usage.

    + Develops, coordinates, and delivers communication plans and communications.

    + Presides over, or serves on, boards of directors, management committees, or other governing boards.

    + Recruits, selects, onboards, and trains employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.

    + Sets expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensures work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

    What You'll Need for Success:

    The ideal candidate in this role should have 11+ years of experience applying the below, outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.

     

    Completion of relevant educational degree(s) may substitute for equivalent years of experience.

     

    + Thorough knowledge in program subject matter (e.g., theories, principles, practices, laws, strategies) obtained through experience and/or education, preferably related to public health.

    + Extensive knowledge of the organization and function of state and local partners

    + Extensive knowledge of all source materials and references including federal and state laws governing the programs

    + Effective communication

    + Ability to adapt new statues and guidelines to create and implement new principles and policies and discern any far-reaching implications

    + Ability to present and represent the agency to both internal and external customers, the public, government officials, and other stakeholders

    + Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems

    + Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders

    + Ability to analyze and prepare monthly finance and accounting reports to maintain program budget and grants

    + Supervisors (not applicable to all):

    + Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.

    + Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

    Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

    This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
