    Maintenance Mechanic - Distribution

    Position Summary

    Salary: $33.64- $38.43 upon meeting progression step requirements. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs. For administrative positions:

     

    This position will work 3rd shift 4 months out of the year (typically May- August), and first shift the remaining months. A shift differential of $3.00 per hour will apply during the third-shift period. The schedule will be based on business needs and ultimately determined at the manager’s discretion.

     

    This position specialize in routine sewer and grease trap maintenance and water distribution maintenance; i.e. – valve operating and hydrant flushing/maintenance. This position will analyze, perform preventive maintenance, install and repair utility distribution systems such as water/sewer, steam/condensate; assemble, install and test a variety of metal and non-metal pipe and fittings including brass, copper, steel and plastic; operate pipe cutters, pipe threading machine, power cut saw, cutting torch, drill press, impact drills, backhoe, sewer cleaning equipment, dump truck, and hand tools; prepare excavation work site including erecting barricades, shoring and other safety related equipment; requisition materials and parts; stock, maintain and operate a service vehicle. This position will also interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and job specifications; estimate time and material to be used on the job; stock, maintain, and may operate a University service vehicle. This position will carry an on-call cell phone on a weekly rotating basis.

    Breakdown of job responsibilities are as follows:

    35%: Perform routine maintenance, repair and install all components of a water distribution system. Complete valve maintenance and operation program, and also hydrant flushing annually.

     

    35%: Use of sewer cleaning equipment and various repairs, to help maintain storm/sanitary leads and mains throughout campus. Clean and Maintain all kitchen facility grease interceptors

     

    10%: Troubleshoot, maintain and repair all aspects of Steam distribution system throughout campus.

     

    10%: Use of heavy equipment (Backhoe, forklift, dump truck) to assist with all maintenance and repair activities.

     

    10%: Training associated with S-License, steam practices, safety and various University related training. Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

     

    This position will engage in high performing, leading edge practices, valuing people, partners and stewardship.

    Minimum Requirements

    Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience; Successful completion of an applicable trade-specific Trades Helper program, or completion of an approved apprenticeship program, or an associate degree, or equivalent education/experience; five years experience in the mechanical distribution trade that includes two years of experience in commercial Outside Distribution installation, maintenance and trouble-shooting and demonstrated ability to independently perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification; Demonstrated ability to perform work to accepted industry standards; Expert knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the mechanical distribution trade; Expert knowledge of applicable building codes, rules, and regulations; must furnish own tools; possession of a valid State of Michigan vehicle operator's license; Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds.

     

    Must pass an assessment to receive progression step increases at and after the 18-month mark.

     

    Possession of a valid Michigan Class B Commercial Driver's License with applicable endorsements and medical certificate to comply with State of Michigan requirements within the first 12 months of employment.

    Desired Qualifications

    DEQ water distribution S-4 certification; experience operating heavy equipment such as a backhoe and dump truck, possession of a valid Michigan Class B Commercial Driver's License with applicable endorsements and medical certificate to comply with State of Michigan requirements; Experience in customer contact. At least two years of experience operating and maintaining sewer cleaning equipment.
