The Idaho Bureau of Laboratories is seeking to fill a full-time permanent position for Microbiologist Senior in Boise. This position will routinely handle and test various specimen types in a biosafety cabinet, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and adhere to safe laboratory practices. This position requires attentiveness and response to both routine and outbreak testing situations. Due to this nature, we are seeking a candidate who excels in a fast-paced team environment and can balance a workload while coordinating multiple priorities. Responsibilities include routine drinking water testing, culturing and extracting bacterial, viral, and fungal specimens, preparing media, performing daily temperature and calibration checks on various lab devices, and peer-review of submission form data to ensure no transcription errors are made. The incumbent will also serve as the a point of contact for laboratory clients when communicating environmental testing results.
This position is not eligible for telework.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
+ Performs routine drinking water testing for both public and private laboratory clients.
+ Communicates environmental testing results to laboratory clients.
+ Performs high-complexity conventional bacteriology/virology/mycology, molecular, and chemical analyses on reference, environmental, and proficiency testing samples under the supervision of technical supervisors.
+ Interprets results, reports findings, and records results in a laboratory information database.
+ Performs sample accessioning, tracking, and data entry.
+ Prepares media, reagents, stains, standards, and quality control solutions.
+ Performs quality control and proficiency testing and evaluates results.
+ Maintains records, charts, and inventory systems.
+ Performs routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. + Completion of the core requirements of a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry AND Approximately two years of journey level supervised laboratory experience OR Completion of a Master's Degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related science and one year experience OR experience or a combination of coursework and experience that represents the knowledge level above.
+ Good knowledge of standard testing, quality control, safety practices, and the application of the laws and regulations relative to a microbiology laboratory.
+ Experience operating, calibrating and trouble-shooting laboratory equipment, including microscopes, centrifuges and pH meters. Typically gained by at least one year operating, calibrating and trouble-shooting laboratory equipment, including microscopes, centrifuges and pH meters.
Below is preferred experience. It is not required for the position but applicants with this experience may receive consideration over other applicants.
+ Experience with environmental sample testing (e.g., food and water). Typically gained by at least 1 year of work in a laboratory setting.
+ Experience with real-time PCR (rt-PCR) technologies. Typically gained by at least 1 year of work in a laboratory setting.
+ Experience with automated extraction platforms used to isolate DNA/RNA from bacterial/viral/fungal specimens. Typically gained by at least 1 year of work in a laboratory setting.
+ Experience with LIMS or a similar database. Typically gained by at least one month of work in a laboratory or clinical setting.
+ Experience with media preparation. Typically gained by at least one month of work in a laboratory setting.
