Duties Description Under the direction of the Supervising Parks and Recreation Forest Ranger, the incumbent of this position will be responsible for the prevention and control of forest fires, for the protection of state parklands, and for the conservation of fish and wildlife and other natural resources found in state parklands. Parks and Recreation Forest Rangers organize and direct search and rescue emergency operations and provide information and education to a variety of youth and adult groups. The incumbent of this position will have substantial contact with the public and other law enforcement personnel and may oversee the work of seasonal employees. The position of Parks and Recreation Forest Ranger have Peace Officer status per the Criminal Procedure Law.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:There is no active Civil Service Eligible List for this title. You may be eligible for appointment by meeting one of the following qualifications.*NY HELPS and 55-b/c Qualifications:The Parks and Recreation Forest Ranger, SG-12, title is a part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55-b/c, candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications for the position. The qualifications are: An Associate’s or higher-level degree in parks, recreation, forestry, environmental sciences or fire sciences; OR a high school or equivalency diploma and one year of experience in forest management, forest fire control, wildlife preservation, or search and rescue; OR a high school or equivalency diploma and one year of paid firefighting experience; OR a high school or equivalency diploma and two years of volunteer firefighting experience. Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a permanent non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examinations for which they are qualified.Current permanent non-competitive state employees certified eligible for the 55-b/c program under the Governor's Program to Hire Persons/Veterans with Disabilities pursuant to Section 55-b/c of the Civil Service Law will also be considered. Subsequent 55-b/c Qualifications:A subsequent 55-b/c appointment may be considered if you have a least one year of permanent or contingent permanent qualifying service and have a current Civil Service 55-b/c letter of eligibility.Reassignment Qualifications:Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55-b/c qualifying service as a Parks and Recreation Forest Ranger.Reinstatement Under Rule 5.4Candidates who were previously permanently employed by New York State in this title may be reinstated to this position. Employees separated from their positions may be reinstated within one year of the date of separation. Employees who have been separated from State service for more than one year may be reinstated upon approval of the New York State Civil Service Commission.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:*Must be able to work a variable schedule which may include weekends and holidays.*Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.*Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods, climb, pull and lift heavy objects.*Must obtain and maintain Certifications in First Aide, CPR an AED as a term and condition of employment.*Must have the ability to supervise and train others.*Must obtain Peace Officer Certification during the probationary period and must maintain certification as a term and condition of employment. *Must be physical able to perform fire suppression and Search and Rescue Activities for prolonged periods of time.This position requires a background check.If you have previous or current employment at a NYS Agency, to be considered for this position, a review of your state history is needed.
