Description

Legal non-profit based in the San Francisco Bay Area has an immediate opening for an Attorney! This Attorney will work on the Housing team to defend tenants against eviction, enforce existing tenant protections, and advocate for just and legal outcomes for tenants. The Housing team includes attorneys, project coordinators, and a project manager who work collaboratively on all aspects of the program. This position offers an opportunity to handle a high volume of cases, engage in client advocacy, and contribute to equitable housing outcomes. If you're passionate about making San Mateo County a more just and equitable place to live and work, this is the position for you! This is a hybrid role, requiring occasional on-site work in Redwood City with a flexible in-office schedule. Attorneys from all backgrounds and tenures are encouraged to apply! Must hold an active CA Bar license for consideration.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct client intake and interviews to assess legal needs and identify case issues.

• Prepare and file legal pleadings, including judicial council forms, in response to unlawful detainer actions.

• Provide legal counsel to tenants, guiding them through the eviction process and their rights under housing laws.

• Collaborate with team members and supervising attorneys to develop case strategies and ensure effective representation.

• Perform legal research and apply fair housing laws to support tenant advocacy efforts.

• Coordinate with program managers and project coordinators to manage case progress and deadlines.

• Draft and review legal documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable laws.

• Maintain clear communication with clients, addressing their concerns and managing expectations.

• Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing efforts to improve housing justice.

Requirements

Qualifications:

• Active license to practice law in California.

• Understanding of civil litigation and fair housing laws is preferred.

• Experience with client intake and conducting interviews.

• Familiarity with unlawful detainer and eviction processes is a plus.

• Ability to manage a high case volume while maintaining attention to detail.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially when working with clients.
