Responsibilities You will lead and manage the work of the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) in the development of the data analysis systems for the USNO ground-based and space -based astrometry programs. You will serve as the principal investigator for USNO's efforts in astrometric and geodetic capabilities. You will make long-term plans and submit proposals to support ground and space-based astrometry missions. You will develop expert knowledge of the department's computer systems and its subsystems to lead troubleshooting during routine operation and maintenance. You will participate in the observatory's support to various astrometric projects, and conduct an independent research program in support of the observatory mission. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying deep technical expertise in areas of physics, astronomy, and astrophysics, including knowledge of astrometry, and specialized astronomical instrumentation. Experience conducting research that supports projects of national significance for the Department of Defense. Experience supporting the development of astronomical systems or software and the transition of the systems or software to operations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Education Basic Requirements: Degree: in one or a combination of astronomy, physics, mathematics, space science, or electronics. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus and 12 semester hours in astronomy and/or physics. or Combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours of courses equivalent to a major in any combination of astronomy, space science, physics, mathematics, and electronics, with required course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. There are no educational substitutions for basic requirements.
