Merrimack Health is the newly unified regional health system formed through the 2024 integration of Lawrence General Hospital with the Holy Family Hospitals (Methuen and Haverhill campuses). As of October 1, 2024, these three campuses operate together as one coordinated, mission-driven system: Merrimack Health Lawrence Hospital, Merrimack Health Haverhill Hospital and Merrimack Health Methuen Hospital.

Position Overview:
The Associate Medical Director will be responsible for the clinical and administrative leadership of the Haverhill Emergency Department and report to the Medical Director, Emergency Department and the System Chief of Emergency Medicine. The Associate Medical Director’s duties shall include, but are not limited to, the following:
I. Clinical Leadership
+ Ensure high-quality, evidence-based medical care is delivered to all patients in the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Maintain active clinical practice within the Emergency Department, as required by the hospital.
+ Assist in the development and implementation of clinical protocols, guidelines, and policies for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Monitor and improve key performance indicators, including patient throughput, door-to-provider times, quality metrics, and patient experience scores for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Foster a culture of patient safety, quality improvement, and adherence to best practices.
+ Provide direct consultation and resolution for complex medical cases as necessary.
II. Administrative Duties
+ Assist in ensuring adequate physician and advanced practice provider (APP) staffing for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Collaborate with the ED Nursing Director for Haverhill to optimize operational efficiency, including patient flow, bed availability, and coordination with inpatient services.
+ Provide input to the Medical Director and System Chief regarding the ED budget, staffing needs, and operational expenses for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and retention of ED physicians and APPs assigned to the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Participate in regular performance evaluations of ED physicians and APPs and provide constructive feedback for professional development.
+ Assist in developing physician and APP schedules for the Haverhill Emergency Department, ensuring fairness and efficiency.
+ Represent the Haverhill Emergency Department in local hospital committees and leadership meetings, as delegated by the Medical Director and System Chief.
III. Education and Training
+ Support continuing medical education for Haverhill ED staff, including organizing training sessions and in-service programs.
+ Serve as a mentor to physicians, APPs, and medical trainees rotating through the Haverhill Emergency Department.
IV. Quality and Compliance
+ Monitor adherence to hospital policies and regulatory requirements, including Joint Commission and CMS standards, for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Support efforts to reduce medical errors, adverse events, and hospital-acquired infections for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Oversee compliance with EMTALA regulations and ensure proper documentation and reporting for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
+ Participate in regular morbidity and mortality reviews, addressing issues specific to the Haverhill Emergency Department and implementing necessary improvements.
+ Assist in root cause analyses for sentinel events and contribute to the development of quality improvement plans.
V. Liaison and Community Relations
+ Serve as a liaison between the Haverhill Emergency Department and hospital administration, medical staff, nursing, and ancillary departments.
+ Collaborate with the EMS Medical Director and local EMS providers to enhance pre-hospital emergency care for the Haverhill community.
+ Engage with community stakeholders to improve emergency services and disaster preparedness for the Haverhill Emergency Department.
VI. Other Responsibilities
+ Serve as administrative attending on-call along with the System Chief and other medical directors and attendings, as designated by the System Chief. In this role, respond to administrative and clinical issues on a 24/7 basis or ensure appropriate designee coverage.
+ Attend required leadership meetings, as delegated by the Medical Director or System Chief, including quality and operational committees.
+ Engage in hospital-wide emergency preparedness planning and response initiatives.
+ Perform other duties as assigned by the Medical Director, Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital, or the System Chief of Emergency Medicine.
Reporting Structure
The Associate Medical Director, Haverhill Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital, shall report directly to the Medical Director, Emergency Department, Holy Family Hospital, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the System Chief of Emergency Medicine. The Associate Medical Director shall collaborate closely with the ED Nursing Director of the Haverhill Emergency Department.
Exhibit shall be considered an integral part of the Physician’s employment contract and shall be subject to periodic review and modification as deemed necessary by the hospital and the Associate Medical Director, Haverhill Emergency Department
Requirements:
+ Board-certified/board-eligible emergency medicine-trained physician
+ Licensed Physician - Current Massachusetts Medical License required.
