    Job Description

    Managing Editor, Periodicals

Reporting to the Associate Director, the **Managing Editor, Periodicals** supports the publishing mission of the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies (IAJS) through the coordination and oversight of both print and digital publications, including books, e-books, public scholarship, and journal articles, particularly of the Jesuit Educational Quarterly. The Managing Editor facilitates collaboration among internal staff, academic editors, contributing authors, and external vendors to ensure the timely and high-quality production of publications affiliated with the Institute and its publishing house, the Institute of Jesuit Sources.

The Managing Editor works directly with authors throughout the editorial process and plays a key role in soliciting high-quality manuscripts that support the Institute’s educational and scholarly mission. The role also includes managing peer review workflows, overseeing editorial and production timelines, and ensuring the accuracy and visibility of digital content and metadata across web and publishing platforms.

The Managing Editor must work well in a team-driven environment, as well as independently. Evidence of successful project management and strong communication skills are required, as is a strong understanding and ongoing awareness of the Jesuit Catholic mission and a willingness to engage with its evolving educational and scholarly priorities.

As time and/or schedules permit, the Managing Editor will assist with additional Institute outreach initiatives or special projects, particularly those that promote research and resources aligned with the Jesuits' educational and spiritual mission.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $76,050 to $95,050; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

    Requirements

+ Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred, ideally in publishing, English, communications, history, theology, or a related humanities or scholarly field.

+ Demonstrated experience in editorial and production workflows for academic journals, scholarly publications, or mission-driven periodicals, including coordination of peer review and author relations.

+ Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent editorial projects, deadlines, and vendor relationships across print and digital platforms.

+ Technical proficiency with publishing and digital production tools, including Adobe InDesign and related workflows (e.g., PDF, EPUB, XML, metadata management, or journal platforms such as OJS), or the demonstrated ability to learn them quickly.

+ Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the capacity to collaborate effectively with scholars, editors, vendors, and institutional partners; familiarity with or interest in Jesuit, Catholic, or religious academic traditions strongly preferred.
