What You'll Do
+ Support quality and safety by applying performance‑improvement practices and sharing best‑practice insights across the department.
+ Communicate clearly with care teams, document thoroughly, and use critical thinking to support safe, effective patient care.
+ Build strong, positive working relationships, mentor colleagues, and contribute to a healthy, respectful workplace culture.
+ Take initiative in your own professional development and help elevate the skills of others through knowledge‑sharing.
+ Follow all sterile processing, decontamination, infection control, and safety standards.
+ Clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, and sterilize instruments and equipment using both manual and mechanical methods.
+ Prepare surgical trays, set up case carts, maintain inventory, and troubleshoot sterilization equipment.
+ Work efficiently with attention to cost‑effective use of time and materials.
+ Participate actively as a team member and uphold UPMC's Core Values through reliable, compassionate, and detail‑driven work.
+ Perform additional duties as needed to support patient care and department operations.

+ High school diploma/GED required; no experience needed. Enrollment in an accredited Surgical Tech/Sterile Processing program or 1 year of UPMC experience preferred.
+ Grandfathered technicians without certification must complete 10 hours of annual continuing education; certified staff must complete 10-12 hours per certifying body requirements.
+ New hires in PA and NY must obtain certification within 18 months (MD excluded).
+ Must be able to stand for full shifts and lift/push/pull up to 35 lbs.
+ Accepted certifications: Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA).
+ Act 34 clearance required.
