    Verdantas is seeking a talented Fisheries Intern to join our team in support of several Field and Laboratory projects within the Aquatic Ecology and Engineering Division. A March 2026 start date is anticipated and would continue through August, with potential to extend into Fall of 2026.

     

    The following are anticipated based on the current workload projections; however, the actual responsibilities of this position may not include all of the following or may include other responsibilities based on project schedules and resources needs.

     

    + Assist with laboratory evaluations including enumerating fish into test groups, releasing/collecting fish from test flume and collecting test related data.

    + Perform fish identification, length, and weight measurements.

    + Perform fish husbandry tasks including feeding and maintenance of multi-tank recirculation aquaculture facilities.

    + Measure water quality parameters (i.e., water temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, etc.) with handheld and data logging meters and collection of grab samples for shipment to an analysis laboratory.

    + Support an ongoing fish trap and truck program during the stocking season (April-June), including traveling by truck to assist in loading fish in trailer mounted tank at source location then travel to stocking destination and assist in offloading fish.

    + Assist fishery biologist staff in conducting nighttime surveys for American Eel at base of several small hydropower dam sites.

    + Assist fishery biologist staff in conducting fish tagging in the field at a hydropower project site.

    + Perform fish impingement sampling including removal of fish from collection tanks and assess survival and injury categories.

    + Operation water sampling equipment including composite samplers and water pumps.

    + Wash down plankton netting, consolidate and preserve samples in the field in preparation of shipping/transport.

    + Review, understand, and interpret study sampling plans and standard operating procedures.

    + Completion of field documentation in a timely manner, such as job safety analysis forms, datasheets, and chain-of-custody forms.

    + Recordkeeping and maintenance of testing and field equipment.

    + Complete all required safety trainings and wear the appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) (i.e., safety glasses, personal flotation device, waders, headlamps, etc.), provided by Verdantas.

    Qualifications:

    + Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in fisheries, environmental science, biology or similar.

    + Capable of working in an outdoor work environment near or over water, and occasional office environment.

    + Capable of working some night and weekends shifts as required by projects.

    + Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs.

    + Must have a valid driver's license.

    + Must be able to pass a drug screening and background check.

    + Support fieldwork at local projects (i.e., 1-2 hr drive of Holden, MA office) and non-local projects requiring overnight travel (i.e., 3+hr drive or air travel). Transportation from Holden Office will be provided and/or transportation expense will be covered.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Small craft and outboard boat operation experience

    + OSHA 10-Hour Certification

    Salary Range:

    $24-26 per hour
