Summary:
Provide routine clinical and administrative support to podiatrists and other health care team members in the
Wound and Podiatry Clinic. Works under the clinical supervision of the podiatrist
for patient care activities, and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor. An individual in this role
must meet the requirements for a Certified Medical Assistant II at UNC Health and must have prior
education and training in performing podiatry
related job responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
1.Performs rooming and/or intake process, collecting and data, including vital signs, height, weight, and data related to patient's reason for visit.
2.Collects patient and family data, including medical and social history.
3.Reviews patient's current medication list, allergies and preferred pharmacy.
4. Assists the podiatrist as directed, during treatments, examinations and procedures.
5. Collects specimens, such as nail trimmings
6. Draws up and/or administers medications under the direction of a podiatrist
7. Defrosts and logs grafts to be used during podatric procedures.
8. Performs casting and splint removal.
9. Performs suture removaI.
10. Assists podiatrist in application of casts- soft and hard.
11. Performs nail trimming after asssessment by podiatrist. This does not include ingrown toenails.
12. Performs callus removal after assessment by podiatrist.
13. Performs extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) following assessment by Podiatrist and using settings ordered by Podiatrist
14. Performs tests under the direction of a podiatrist.
15. Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure.
16. Reinforces patient teaching provided by Podiatrist or nurse.
17. Provides patient with after-visit, follow-up, self-care or procedural instructions and/or educational materials as directed.
18. Prepares, cleans, stocks and maintains exam and treatment rooms.
19. Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
20. Assists with patient registration, check in/check out, appointment scheduling, and scheduling of tests and treatments, and referrals.
21. Answers clinic telephone and assists in-basket under the direction of a podiatrist or nurse.
22. Assists in emergency situations as directed by podiatrist or nurse.
23. Additional Essential Responsibilities of a Podiatry Support Tech may include: -Assisting the podiatrist with maintaining preventive health measures for a panel of patients.-Performing clinic based quality or safety role (ex. clinic safety coordinator, performs medication, or other required audits) -Managing clinic supply ordering.

Education Requirements:
• None required as long as other position qualifications are met.
• Requires Medical Assistant certification by either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Healthcareer Association (CCMA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA).
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• Approved as a Certified Medical Assistant II at UNC Health.
• Prefer candidates with current Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association or American Red Cross at the time of hire. If selected candidate does not possess BLS, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Professional Experience Requirements:
• Possess at least two years of full time experience as a Certified Medical Assistant in an outpatient clinical setting
• Possess at least one year of full-time experience as a Certified Medical Assistant under the supervision of a board certified podiatrist (Doctor of Podiatry Medicine).
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the position as outlined above. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to engage positively with patients and families and to work as a team with staff and podiatrists. Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.
