Position Description
The MNPD Aviation Helicopter Pilot, assigned to the Special Operations Division, shall serve as a pilot within the MNPD Aviation Unit. The pilot is directly accountable to the Aviation Unit Sergeant for the proper administration, management, and oversight of all matters related to the operation of the unit. The position is governed by the same duties, rules, and regulations applicable to all employees of the department.
The mission of the MNPD Aviation Unit is to provide aviation support to various elements of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, as well as to local and federal law enforcement agencies operating within Nashville-Davidson County, Tennessee.
The primary emphasis of the unit is to:
+ Improve police response time and effectiveness through airborne operations.
+ Provide aerial patrols of high-crime areas.
+ Support law enforcement patrol and investigative efforts.
+ Assist special operations and tactical teams.
+ Increase officer and public safety through aerial search and patrol operations.
+ Provide overwatch of critical infrastructure.
+ Deliver aviation support during regional emergencies and natural disasters.
+ Assist with dignitary protection.
+ Strengthen community relations through static aircraft displays.

Typical Duties
+ + Conduct flights in helicopters and other department aircraft as required, in support of police field units and law enforcement operations. Flights include close air support of Patrol, Canine, SWAT, Detectives, and other units, in misdemeanor and felony apprehensions, transport flights, night and day operations. Aviation Pilot duties include duties as a “Tactical Flight Officer,” operating additional equipment on board the aircraft such as the FLIR, binoculars, moving map/GPS systems, various communication radios and the Microwave downlink system. Positive radio and verbal communications with other crew members, air traffic control and ground units are essential for this position.
+ Applicant must have the ability to perform complex multi-task roles and maintain a safe flying environment while flying.
+ Applicant must have the ability to fly different makes and models of aircraft according to the manufacturers published limitations, departmental procedures, and FAA regulations in a law enforcement role.
+ Applicant must have the ability to work in a crew situation and adhere to crew resource management principles for safe operations. Applicant must have the ability to receive training, maintain and demonstrate pilot proficiency semi-annually and meet all required FAA pilot standards required for the position.
+ Applicant must maintain department aircraft, which includes cleaning, washing, and assisting in the maintenance of aircrafts as required. Additional duties may be assigned as per the Unit Commander.
+ Applicant must complete other related aviation and department duties as required.
+ Applicant must have and remain knowledgeable of FAA regulations, laws, policies, Airworthiness Directives; Pilot Operating Handbooks of aircraft flown; MNPD Policies and Procedures; and the Tactical Operations Section – Aviation Unit SOP.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
+ High School Diploma
+ 1500 hours Rotorcraft time
+ 1000 hours turbine time
+ 1000 hours PIC (pilot in command) time
+ Current FAA Biennial Flight Review or Military Equivalent
+ 300 hours Night Vision Goggle (NVG) experience
LICENSES REQUIRED
+ Valid Driver License
+ 1st or 2nd Class FAA Medical Certificate
+ Commercial Rotorcraft Helicopter Pilot License or higher rating
+ Have no significant enforcement action or accident history with previous employer(s)

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Recent experience in Bell OH-58/206 and Airbus HS125/AS350
+ Additional FAA Fixed Wing or Rotorcraft ratings: CFI, CFII, and/or Instrument
+ Bachelor’s Degree or higher
+ Prior Law Enforcement Experience or Commission
+ Part 91, Part 135, or police operations experience
+ Knowledge of the Wescam MX-10, BMS Microwave Downlink System, Moving Map Systems, Technisonic Radios
+ Ability to furnish logbooks for verification of flight time
