    The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University seeks a passionate educator and an extraordinary musician to be appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor of Music Theory and teach Ear Training beginning August 2026.

    Responsibilities

    + Working as part of a team to teach all levels of ear training within our undergraduate and graduate curricula, including developing advanced electives in musicianship techniques and theory graduate seminars

    + Serving on departmental, school, and university committees

    + Participating in departmental reviews and curriculum development

    + Maintaining an active profile of scholarship, composition, and/or performance

     

    Peabody's Music Theory Department complements the teaching of our applied faculty, giving our students a deeper understanding of music through the exploration of compositional styles and techniques. The faculty in the Department of Music Theory comprises scholars, composers, and performers. Previous Music Theory faculty include Danish composer Asger Hamerik, first director of the Conservatory (1871); Otto Ortmann, a pioneer in the psychology of music and director of Peabody; renowned pedagogue and composer Nadia Boulanger (1942-43); and composers Elliott Carter (1946-47) and Henry Cowell (1951-56). The Department offers a master's degree in Music Theory Pedagogy and an undergraduate minor in Music Theory. Mentorship opportunities are available to Department members. The Music Theory faculty is supported by 13 full-time graduate assistants.

    Qualified applicants will be able to document successful teaching experience at the collegiate level and an active profile of scholarship and/or artistic activities. A doctorate is preferred. Applicants should be familiar with current trends in aural skills pedagogy and have experience teaching classroom ear training.

     

    Salary: $60,000 - $70,000

    The listed salary range represents the minimum and maximum Johns Hopkins University offers for this position, based on a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, market conditions, education, and internal equity. Not all candidates will qualify for the highest salary in the range.
