    Job Description

    The Transportation Group of AECOM is actively seeking an experienced, highly talented Senior Archaeologist for immediate employment in the Raleigh, NC office. The candidate will join an excellent team with significant career growth potential.

     

    This Senior Archaeologist position will support the multi-discipline environmental group in transportation. This candidate will serve as Principal Investigator and perform tasks ranging from project management, fieldwork, research, report writing, data collection and compilation, GIS mapping, and technical review among other duties.

     

    + The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

    + Leads fieldwork (survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring), archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection and compilation, and GIS mapping.

    + Conducts quality technical reviews of compliance documents, prepared by internal staff and external consultants.

    + Gathers data and other information to be used in the preparation of environmental reports of investigations; compiles and organizes data collected by others.

    + Assesses data, summarizes, and communicates key aspects that are meaningful to the work of other team members.

    + Evaluates archaeological resources for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and/or other relevant federal and state laws.

    + Prepares Section 106 documents and reports including Phase I/II Survey Reports, testing and data recovery plans, data recovery reports, assessments of effects, agency coordination, Memoranda of Agreement/Understanding (MOAs/MOUs), and archaeology portions of NEPA documents.

    + Oversees curation efforts for assigned projects to ensure timely submittal of curation packages following project completion.

    + Guides projects through the Section 106 process, tracking project schedules, deliverables, and budgets. Anticipates project needs, next steps, and identifies/communicates risks to applicable project team members.

    + Works under the supervision of manager but can complete all but the most complex tasks with minimal supervision.

    + Conducts interdisciplinary collaboration with engineers and environmental specialists.

    + Supports business development activities and mentorship of staff.

    Qualifications

    Minimum:

    + Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field, and 4 years of archaeology experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

    + Meets Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.

    Preferred:

    + Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field, and:

    + 4 years of experience in working in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and historic preservation, including ability to work on a wide range of projects, within interdisciplinary teams, and balance a demanding workload.

    + 4 years of experience with Federal and State CRM requirements, processes, and guidance, including Sections 106 and 110 of the NHPA, National Park Service NRHP bulletins, and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

    + 4 years of experience with NRHP eligibility criteria and aspects of integrity.

    + 4 years of relevant experience including artifact identification skills and experience with the identification of both prehistoric and historic material and advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic, ceramic, or faunal analysis; historical archaeology).

    + 2 years of experience in performing archaeological surveys and preparing reports for transportation projects administered by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and/or the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

    + Familiarity and working experience with Google Earth Pro, ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap

    + Experience reading and interpreting transportation plans

    + Experience mentoring or providing a technical quality review of CRM documents

    + Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, & Teams)

    + Proficient and experienced in demonstrating a high degree of professionalism, self-motivation, and a strong desire to work in a collaborative team environment

    + Experienced and proficient in proactive communication, including responsiveness, detailed assessments, and effective risk management

    Additional Information

    + Relocation is not an option for this position

    Offered rate of compensation will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The range for this position is $70000 to $95000.
