The goal of the [Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research](https://www.mdanderson.org/research/departments-labs-institutes/programs-centers/michale-e-keeling-center-for-comparative-medicine-and-research.html) is to eliminate cancer and allied diseases by developing and maintaining specialized programs in animal models, research and education. Our standard will be defined by quality of care and research service as well as compassion and respect for the needs of research animals. Research at the Keeling Center has led to the development of synthetic peptide-based candidate vaccines for the prevention and treatment of AIDS caused by HIV, and for the treatment of cervical precancerous lesions caused by high-risk human papillomaviruses.
*SUMMARY*
The *Senior Animal Resources Technologist *will support the Clinical Laboratory within the [Department of Comparative Medicine](https://www.mdanderson.org/research/departments-labs-institutes/programs-centers/michale-e-keeling-center-for-comparative-medicine-and-research.html), through sample collection, processing, storage, and shipment. The *Senior Animal Resources Technologist* performs serological and pregnancy testing, prepares samples for parasitic evaluation, and trains staff on Multiplexed Fluorometric Immunoassay (MFIA) and BioPlex operations, troubleshooting, and quality assurance. The *Senior Animal Resources Technologist* will provide training for the Biologics Program Coordinator in preparing price quotes, taking orders, collecting specimens, processing samples, shipping samples, and billing for samples.
The ideal *Senior Animal Resources Technologist* candidate brings 5+ years of experience performing MFIA using Bio-Plex systems, with expertise in quality control (QC), calibration, validation, assay programming, and troubleshooting. They are highly skilled in clinical laboratory operations, including sample collection, processing, storage, and shipment, as well as serological and pregnancy testing and preparing samples for parasitic evaluation. This individual excels at training laboratory staff on MFIA and Bio-Plex operation and maintenance and guiding the Biologics Program Coordinator in quoting, order management, specimen handling, shipping, and billing. Strong technical proficiency, organizational skills, and attention to detail are essential for success in this role.
*Salary Range: Minimum $61,425 | Midpoint $73,500 | Maximum $86,100*
*KEY FUNCTIONS:*
*Technical Support for the Pathology Laboratory*
Ability to perform and train others on rodent and rhesus serology using MFIA methodologies, ensuring accuracy and quality in testing.
Skilled in receiving, preparing, and processing clinical specimens for examination, including specialized tasks like pregnancy testing and necropsy sample collection.
*Technical Support and Training for Biologics Program*
Oversees all aspects of the biologics program, including price quotes, cost development, order management, specimen collection, sample processing, shipping, billing, and staff training.
Schedules and performs biological product collections, phlebotomy, inoculations, and blood sampling across multiple species, ensuring compliance with the Animal Care and Use Form (ACUF) and safety protocols.
Prepares and processes samples for shipment in accordance with current regulations, maintains hazardous materials certification, and ensures accurate documentation of procedures.
Maintains computerized systems for billing and record-keeping, ensures safety practices (PPE), and ensures accurate animal records and procedural documentation.
*Participates in Good Laboratory Protocols (GLP) and Research Projects*
Participates in GLP studies, completes required in-house training and refresher courses, and ensures adherence to GLP standards and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Conducts clinical pathology tests for GLP protocols, processes specimens, manages receipt and distribution of test/control articles, and coordinates specimen shipments.
Handles and restrains rodents, collects blood samples, performs injections, and assists with other procedures as needed to support research activities.
Other duties as assigned.
Education: Associates degree in Veterinary Technology.
Certification: Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within 180 days of eligibility. Any employee hired or rehired after September 1, 2012 must possess required certification.
Preferred Certification: Laboratory Animal Technologists (LATG) from the American Association for Laboratory Science (AALAS).
Experience: Three years supervisory/team lead experience in clinical or surgical animal procedures; or animal health care and husbandry. May substitute required education with experience on a one to one basis. With preferred degree, one year experience required. With preferred licensure certification, two years experience required.
Preferred Experience: Minimum of five years of experience performing Multiplexed Fluorometric Immunoassay (MFIA) using Bio-Plex. Proficient in performing quality control (QC), calibration, validation and assay programing, and Bio-plex troubleshooting. Experience with coordination of biologics program.
