Responsibilities
Works as member of the Environmental Health and Occupational Safety (Safety) department. Receives guidance from the Senior Health & Safety Specialist and direction from the Director of the department. Works cooperatively with Safety staff and customers to accomplish job. Maintains effective working relationship with variety of staff. Acts on behalf of the department Director (Safety Officer) in their absence, and the absence of other senior level positions, to ensure continuity of safety management and emergency response direction. Will have contact outside Mayo as job duties require.
Majority of time is spent as a safety consultant and resource in guiding activities within the safety, emergency management, and hazardous materials and waste programs in a customer focused environment. Participates in administrative duties as assigned, including budget and resource allocation, and facilitation of staff involved with safety-related projects. Develops and facilitates implementation of creative ideas and suggestions to improve systems, processes, and service; develops and implements new policies and procedures; develops and implements educational programs; evaluates established procedures and educational programs for effectiveness. Must be able to develop, conduct, and facilitate safety audits and perform hazard assessments, including the interpretation of results and facilitate implementation of solutions. Able to analyze and interpret data and participates in decisions regarding data validity and conclusions. Collaborates with enterprise safety, emergency management, and waste management contacts. Must maintain strict confidentiality of information.
Qualifications
Requires Master's in environmental health and safety, or hazardous materials, or related field and 5 years related experience, or Bachelor's degree and 7 years experience, which includes design of independent projects, data analysis and interpretation. Must have ability to organize and implement procedures/techniques independently. Must have significant technical knowledge, understanding of safety regulations, ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in written materials, and ability to work both independently and in a team. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a changing work environment that requires upgrading of skills on a regular basis is required. Must have established presentation and training skills and be capable of demonstrating and exhibiting positive customer service skills. Must have working knowledge of PC and ability to use routine computer software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases).
Healthcare safety experience preferred. OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 40-hour certification desirable. Identification and management of hazardous materials spills, clean up techniques, and waste management preferred. Layers of experience within emergency management, hazardous materials and waste management, industrial hygiene, or ergonomics is desirable. Must be able to respond to hazardous materials spills. Experience in research or clinical laboratory safety programs is desirable. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and meet work completions goals. Must be able to exercise discretion and good judgement. Must be able to work with all levels of management and staff. Must become familiar with all facilities and be able to travel to and conduct work throughout all locations. Must be able to walk throughout campus and facilities. Must be able to withstand moderate physical exertion. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to a changing work environment that requires upgrading of skills on a regular basis. Must periodically participate in department staff rotation of on-call coverage after normal work hours and respond to infrequent urgent requests or emergencies. Must come in early or stay late, when necessary, to complete job-related activities such as surveys, special projects, or training.
A Certified Safety Processional (CSP), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) certification is required within two years of hire.

Schedule Details
Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position participates in an on-call rotation with other department staff. Work hours may occasionally be adjusted to support after-hours work or emergency response needs.
Weekend Schedule
Weekend work is not typical. Infrequent on-call emergencies or department-wide emergency responses may require weekend work.
