Summary Position is with Youth Regional Treatment Center, which provides residential substance abuse & alcohol treatment to eligible Native youth in order to find healthy directions in life; provides educational services for youth diagnosed as substance dependent. Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with IHS, Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, Western Association of Schools & Colleges, YRTC policies and procedures, and State of California Educational Standards. Responsibilities The instructional area is on residents in grades 6 through 12 and whose academic performance is assessed at the elementary grade level. Position reports to the Clinical Director. Teaches students by selecting, developing, adapting, and implementing appropriate instructional methods and techniques utilizing available resources to provide for academic achievement and social growth. Provides learning activities and experiences in assigned subject areas which develop cognitive, effective, and psychomotor skills appropriate to the skills, needs, and interest of all the students in the class. Plans lessons that will lead students into decision-making, problem-solving skills and life living skills. Develops the individual education plans (IEP) for age-appropriate educational programs for residents. Modifies and supplements the computer-based education program in order to maximize effectiveness with the residents. Administers, assesses, and analyzes educational needs battery for each resident. Assesses and plans programs for learning disabilities and remediation needs. Functions as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team providing educational needs assessments and progress reports when needed. Physical Requirements: This position requires standing and sitting, will involve major physical exertion in most activities, may involve physically restraining residents on occasion; some lifting of supplies up to 50 pounds on occasion. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): A. Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled, i.e., elementary or secondary learning level. For secondary school teaching positions, applicants must also have had at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction. --OR-- B. Combination of education and experience - Applicants who have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree but who do not meet the specific course requirements shown above meet minimum qualification requirements if they have completed at least one full academic year of professional teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level as appropriate to the position to be filled. Professional teaching experience is defined as full and primary responsibility for the instruction of assigned students under general supervision in a recognized or accredited school or other accredited educational institution. This includes responsibility for preparation and presentation of lessons and the evaluation of students' progress throughout the learning period, including a determination of the students' success or failure according to established criteria. --OR-- C. Teacher certification or licensure in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Provides instructional educational services in an adolescent; provides learning activities and experiences in assigned subject areas; have broad knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of education and training to instructional and educational administration work in education programs; a certified teacher with specialized training and experience in assessing learning disabilities and planning remediation; and have broad knowledge and experience teaching on both the elementary and secondary school level in multiple subjects. Selective Factor: Additional to the Basic and Minimum requirements, incumbent must be a California state licensed teacher with specialized training and experience in assessing learning disabilities and planning remediation with an endorsement for a State educational department for providing institutions to special education needs. Licensure, Certifications: Applicants should list their license/certifications on their resume, along with the expiration date, if applicable. Certification of licensure/certification will be required after tentative selection and prior to issuing an official job offer. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
