The primary purpose of this position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate health and biology. + CommunicationUnder the general supervision of the Veterinary Services supervisor, the Veterinary Specialist 1 provides veterinary care of nonhuman primates at the WaNPRC-Arizona Breeding Colony (ABC). This position requires technical skills, ability to maintain electronic records/databases, and direct interaction with diverse groups at WaNPRC.The Veterinary Specialist 1 will have the primary duties to included but not limited to the following:General Duties
+ Support of veterinary services by maintaining records, clinical disease diagnostics, processing procedures, administer medications, handle and restrain animals, sedation, collect samples/body weights, maintain equipment and procedure rooms.
+ Conduct screening test to monitor laboratory animal health, e.g. tuberculin testing in nonhuman primates, parasitology, etc.
+ Perform sedation and immobilization with controlled drugs under the direction of a veterinarian.
+ Maintain equipment in accordance with specified standards and SOPs, such as, autoclaves, diagnostic equipment and monthly checklist.
+ Maintain surgery suite in accordance with SOP and instructions by supervisor.
+ Perform set-up and clean-up for procedures, as directed by supervisor.
+ Track inventory and maintain supplies, as directed by supervisor.
+ Provide weekend and holiday coverage.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned.Monitoring
+ Conduct health monitoring for all animals on an assigned basis (daily).
+ Conduct on-going observations of animals under care to assess treatment response.
+ Work with AT staff to triage animals closer when needed.Communication
+ Provide input to veterinarians on animal treatment response.
+ Note any abnormal behaviors during routine duties in animal rooms, enter into appropriate databases and notify veterinary staff.
+ Work with AT staff for BW and animal moves.
+ Participate in other cross-trained duties as needed.
+ May need to provide environmental enrichment when PWB staff is off.
+ Sign for deliveries to ABC, make copies of invoices, and distribute original copies to appropriate parties.
+ Shipping specimens as indicated by supervisor.

Recognizing and valuing diversity will make the Office of Research Primate Center and the University stronger, and enrich the stellar research carried out at the UW. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS** Positions typically require an Associate Degree from an accredited school of animal technology; or registration, certification or licensure in an animal or veterinary technician field and one year experience with the care and treatment of animals in a veterinary practice; or equivalent education/experience. **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Experience working with nonhuman primates.
+ Must be familiar with observing non-human primate behavior and be committed to promoting primate well-being.
+ Desktop computing skills including word processing, spreadsheet design, making graphs, data sheet design, entering data into electronic records. (e.g., ARMS).
+ Demonstrated ability to work reliably and independently.
+ Strong written and oral communication skills. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Registration as an Animal Technician in the State of Arizona. **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**
+ Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at a Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations, such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.
+ Punctuality, regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function of this position.
+ May be required to work with and take specific precautions, against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing.
+ Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures and staying current on all required training. Bloodborne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory.
+ This position involves handling non-human primates and human pathogenic organisms. The ability to work in an ABSL 2 with 3 practices containment facility is required.
+ In addition, the employee is required to maintain all necessary licensing credentials as determined by State and Federal Law.
+ Adhere to the WaNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan requirements for NHPs.
+ Participate in the Behavioral Management and Positive Reinforcement primate Training Programs.
+ Develop a working knowledge of classical and operant conditioning principles and how they apply to handling primates in a research environment, with positive reinforcement as the expectation.
+ Develop a working knowledge of non-human primate behavior.
