    Job Description

    This is a full-time or part-time position that is awarded on a semester basis and is used to fill temporary vacancies. Responsible for teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the chair.

    Essential Job Functions

    1. Prepares and delivers classes to undergraduate and/or graduate students.

    2. Compiles, administers, and grades examinations.

    3. Provides services to the university and the profession.

    4. May conduct supplemental instructional activities such as independent studies, internships, and advising.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

    1. May supervise the work of student and/or graduate assistants.

    2. May serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

    3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

     

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

     

    The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

     

    1. Knowledge and practical experience in the field in which the individual will be teaching.

    2. Ability to effectively teach undergraduate and/or graduate students.

    3. Ability to work within a collaborative faculty environment.

    4. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

    5. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.

     

    Physical Demands

    Required Education

    Master’s degree in the field in which the individual will be teaching is required. Some fields may allow applicable practical experience to substitute for Master’s degree.

     

    Required Experience and Training

     

    Practical experience sufficient to teach at a university level, through teaching or profession, is required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Terminal degree is preferred. Experience teaching at a university level is preferred.

     

    Special Conditions for Eligibility

     

    This is a security-sensitive position subject to criminal record check.

    Other Specifications

    Position Summary:

    Starting Fall 2025, the School of Theatre & Dance is seeking a talented and dedicated part-time instructor to teach musical theatre voice classes. Strong preference given to those with the ability to act as an accompanist. This position is focused solely on teaching and does not involve additional administrative or performance-related duties. The ideal candidate will have expertise in musical theatre vocal techniques and styles and a passion for training students to achieve their fullest potential. Additional background in pop vocal performance preferred but not required.

    Responsibilities:

    + Teaches undergraduate musical theatre voice classes, focusing on healthy vocal production, technique, and interpretation of repertoire.

    + Develops and delivers engaging and effective lesson plans tailored to the needs of students at varying skill levels.

    + Provides constructive feedback to support students’ vocal growth and artistic development.

    + Maintains a positive and supportive classroom environment that fosters learning and creativity.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Master’s degree in music, musical theatre, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

    + Demonstrated expertise in musical theatre vocal styles and techniques.

    + Previous teaching experience at the college or university level preferred.

    + Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Trained pianist with the ability to act as an accompanist during auditions, rehearsals, etc.

    This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule to accommodate class times.

    Benefit and Retirement Eligibility

     

    This position is eligible for participation in the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ), subject to the position being full-time and at least 4 ½ months in length, or the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
