    Overview

     

    HarperCollins seeks a highly motivated **Senior Director of Publicity** to join our dynamic publicity department. Reporting to the SVP of Publicity, this role offers an exceptional opportunity to work with some of Harper’s most prestigious authors and emerging literary talents in both fiction and nonfiction.

     

    The ideal candidate is an individual who thrives in a collegial and collaborative environment and will play an integral role in shaping the publicity strategies for Harper's literary fiction and narrative nonfiction books.

    Responsibilities

    + Implement title-specific publicity plans for prominent house authors

    + Identify key titles, determine budgets, and execute publicity/media campaigns and author events. Personally handle major authors/title campaigns each season to ensure success.

    + Foster and maintain substantive relationships with key broadcast, print, and digital media contacts.

    + Participate in and contribute publicity perspective to key internal meetings, including senior staff meetings, acquisitions meetings, and marketing meetings.

    + Support program/departmental improvement initiatives, including continued cost and process efficiencies/integration.

    + Oversee the creation of press releases, pitch letters, promotional materials, and arrangement of special events, conferences, etc.

    + Attend author pitch meetings and strategy meetings.

    + Attend division meetings and events and have the opportunity to travel as part of author tours and conference participation.

    + Liaise with key departments such as marketing, sales, and editorial to ensure cohesive messaging throughout marketing/publicity initiatives.

    + Book national and local publicity in broadcast and print media and bookstore tours; schedule author travel.

    + Brief authors on how to handle interviews; develop media contacts; accompany authors on interviews.

    + Write press releases, pitch letters, and other promotional materials relating to tours.

    + Coordinate all publicity activities on assigned titles from the mailing of galleys to the development of proper angles and pitches; schedule and plan bookstore appearances and special events; coordinate publicity updates for division and sales force.

    Qualifications

    + At least 10 years of hands-on book publicity experience, with increasing responsibility for campaign management and strategy.

    + Demonstrated success in securing significant publicity placements for bestselling and highly regarded books.

    + Extensive media contacts.

    + Experience working on literary fiction and narrative non-fiction.

    + Ability to work under pressure, to meet tight deadlines with budgetary constraints and changing priorities (must be highly flexible and versatile).

    + Must handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously and have superb written and verbal communication skills.

    + Must be an independent and strategic thinker.

    + Strong interpersonal skills and can work with internal teams to achieve outstanding business results.

    The salary for this position is $145,000-$175,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
