    MISSION STATEMENT

    The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through

     

    outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students,

     

    trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

     

    As an entry level position, the Medical Physicist Assistants will train and improve competency for periodic testing expectations for the various

     

    clinical areas. Clinical Operations and Qualified Medical Physicist will offer personal, direct, or general supervision over testing based on the

     

    need, technologist competency, and location of testing. The expectation is for the Medical Physicist Assistant to adhere to the developed and

     

    agreed upon SOPs for performing annual/periodic testing while allowing QMPs to deliver higher level responsibilities to the department and

     

    division.

     

    Medical Physicist Assistant will maintain proficiency on the clinical imaging devices assigned and deliver training to clinical technologists

     

    on proper equipment operations and radiation safety procedures for all clinical areas; CT, General Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, PET, MRI,

     

    US and Radstation support.

     

    Medical Physicist Assistant role extends to collaboration with Radiological Engineering in the form of service scheduling, support, and

     

    post-service follow-up; Data gathering support, projects, and general supervision from assigned Qualified Medical Physicist; The Medical

     

    Physicist Assistant Team report directly to the Imaging Physics Clinical Operations Manager.

    SUMMARY

    The primary role of Medical Physicist Assistant position is to provide quality assurance of medical imaging equipment, while learning the

     

    practice and participating with Senior Medical Physicist Assistants. The positions responsibilities include initiating, performing, and monitoring

     

    equipment quality control activities for the Department of Imaging Physics and the Division of Diagnostic Imaging. Medical Physicist Assistant

     

    staff also play an intricate role the departments testing equipment database, equipment upkeep, maintenance, and inventory. The team ensures

     

    that an equivalent degree of service is provided to clinics within the Texas Medical Center, as well as, Houston Area Locations and Ancillary

     

    Imaging Centers.

    JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

    Quality Control Management

     

    Assist Senior Medical Physicist Assistants with performing quality control and periodic testing of Medical Imaging Equipment (CT, MRI, Gen Rad,

     

    Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, PET, and RadStation Review Monitors) in accordance with the Texas Department of Health, the Bureau of

     

    Radiation Control, the equipment manufacturer's standards, or as instructed by a licensed Medical Physicist.

     

    + Maintains appropriate level of effort and communication with Senior MPA and Clin Ops Manager for competency assessments, cross training, and

     

    educational components that assist in clinical operations.

     

    + Medical Physicist Assistants will work closely with Senior/Lead MPAs, Clin Ops Manager, and QMPs to assist with SOP development, QC Review Processes, QC Flow-Charts, and QC Error Response.

     

    The MPA Team will maintain records of routine periodic QC test results and prepare monthly reports. Records are required for inspection by

     

    JCAHO, Texas Bureau of Radiation Control and other agencies as needed.

    MPAs will be trained and competency assessed on the following for all respective clinical areas:

    + Assist Senior MPA, Lead MPA, Clin Ops Manager, and QMP with Daily, Weekly, and Periodic testing of clinical image devices.

    + Performs, assist, reports findings, and provides in-service instruction for periodic QC testing as expected by QMP and the Department ofImaging Physics. Includes, but not limited to, Acceptance, Annual, ACR Accreditation, post service, preventative, and other assignments as denoted by the QMP.

    **Computed Tomography Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on CT Clinical Imaging equipment such as Multi-Function CT

     

    Scanners, Hybrid CT Scanners, DynaCT, Interventional CT Systems, and future imaging devices within the Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

     

    **Magnetic Resonance Imaging Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on MRI Clinical Imaging equipment such as 1.5T and 3.0T

     

    clinical magnets, legacy, manual, and automatic coils, and future imaging devices within the Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

     

    **General Radiography Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on General Radiographic and Fluoroscopic equipment such as Chest

     

    and Table Tubes and Detectors, Digital and CR X-Ray Producing Devices, Portal X-Ray systems, C-Arms, Fluoroscopic X-Ray devices,

     

    Interventional Fluoroscopic Suites, and future imaging devices within the Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

     

    **Ultrasound Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on US Clinical Imaging Devices, all respective transducers, and future imaging

     

    devices within the Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

     

    **Nuclear Medicine Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on Nuclear Medicine Gamma Cameras and ancillary equipment such as

     

    Hybrid SPECT-CT systems, Pixelated Detector Imaging Devices, Thyroid Probes, BMD X-Ray systems, and Hot Lab Devices such as well

     

    counters, dose calibrators, surveying equipment, and future imaging devices within the Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

     

    **Positron Emission Tomography Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on PET imaging systems and ancillary equipment such as

     

    Hybrid PET-CT systems and Hot Lab Devices such as well counters, dose calibrators, surveying equipment, and future imaging devices within

     

    the Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

     

    **Interventional Radiology Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on Interventional Radiography equipment such as Interventional Fluoroscopic Suites, CT Imaging Devices, C-Arms, portable Ultrasound systems, and future imaging devices within the Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

    **RadStation Review Monitors Quality Control Expectations** Primary focus is on Radstation Monitors used in both at-home radiologist

     

    consoles and onsite reading rooms throughout the institution. Requires an understanding of computer components, computer upkeep, video

     

    cable and graphics cards, DICOM software, monitor assessment software, and future monitors and viewing devices within the Division of

     

    Diagnostic Imaging.

     

    Offsite and Travel

     

    Houston Area Location, Research Sites, and Imaging Centers Support

     

    Medical Physicist Assistants will deliver equivalent support to all HALs, Research Sites, and Imaging Centers for each of the respective clinical modalities; CT, MRI, Gen Rad, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, PET, and RadStation Review Monitors. Continued support periodic testing on clinical imaging equipment will include, DQA review, Weekly QA, Quarterly ACR, Annual and Acceptance testing, and post service follow-up. Physics Technologist Team will support clinical leadership with in-service refresher rotations on the same frequency of TMC/Main campus clinical areas.

     

    Physics Technologist will provide remote support for clinical staff and imaging technologist in the form of SOP delivery, remote desktop

     

    operations, video conferencing, phone, and email.

     

    Equipment upkeep for HALs, research sites, and Imaging Centers will be conducted in accordance to calibration cycles as used at the TMC

     

    locations. Regulatory compliance standards will govern periodic testing and requirements

     

    Other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

    Required education: Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering or a related physical science.

     

    Required experience: None

     

    Preferred experience: One year of experience working in a radiation-related field.

     

    **Onsite Presence:** Is Required for periodic testing

    **Hybrid Responsibilities** : Will be available to work both on campus and remotely.
