    The ASL Interpreter provides vital interpreting services to ensure effective communication between Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients, their families, and Loyola’s medical staff. This role involves interpreting in medical, mental health, and spiritual settings, offering patient support, and conducting outreach and educational initiatives.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Medical Interpreting Services:

    + Facilitate communication between Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients, their families, and medical staff by accurately interpreting between English and American Sign Language (ASL).

    + Provide interpreting services for Loyola employees who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

    + Assist patients with completing forms and understanding written instructions, including medication schedules.

    + Deliver Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) services for Loyola Medical Center and satellite clinics.

    + Maintain accurate and detailed records of all interpreting encounters.

    + Conduct patient outreach to confirm appointments for Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients.

    Advocacy and Needs Assessment:

    + Identify and assess interpreting needs for patients, families, and friends throughout the care continuum.

    + Advocate for effective communication and accessibility within medical, mental health, and spiritual settings.

    Educational and Training Services:

    + Provide regular training sessions or presentations on topics such as working with ASL interpreters, Deaf culture, and using VRI equipment.

    + Collaborate with the Interpreter Department staff to enhance services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing patients and their families.

    + Coordinate outreach programs on healthcare topics for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.

    + Mentor ASL interpreter students through observation and practical experience opportunities.

    + Teach sign language classes to Loyola staff and assist with the Qualified Bilingual Staff (QBS) program.

    Position Requirements:

    Minimum Education:

    **Required:** High School Diploma plus training acquired through work experience or education

    **Preferred:** Associate degree OR equivalent training acquired via work experience or education

    **Specify Degree(s):** NAD-RID Certificate of Interpretation and Transliteration, or NAD-RID National Interpreter Certification

    Minimum Experience:

    **Required:** 1-2 years of previous job-related experience

    **Preferred:** 3-5 years of previous job-related experience

    **Details:** Must have experience in medical interpreting.

    Licensure/Certifications:

    **Required:** ASL (American Sign Language) License - Advanced Level

    National Interpreter Certification (NIC) or equivalent

    **Preferred:** ASL (American Sign Language) License - Masters Level

    **Other:** Illinois requires ASL Interpreters to achieve a minimum of an Advanced level license to practice in health care; Master level candidates are strongly preferred.

     

    Pay Range: $43.05
