    SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

    This position teaches Science Inquiry & Methods for the Inclusive Classroom (INCL 02322) in the Bachelor of Arts in Inclusive Education – Elementary Program at RCBC. Adjunct faculty work under the direction of the Department Chairs and the administration of the Division of Humanities, Business, and Social Sciences to facilitate class instruction, evaluate student performance, develop and manage syllabus and course materials, and comply with any Department, Division, or College requirements.     COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This course focuses on assessment practices in science education and developing instructional strategies for teaching science content as a means for achieving scientific literacy and understanding scientific inquiry. Candidates will explore strands of science including Nature of Science, Science as Inquiry, and Science Outreach and Resources, as well as Technology & Engineering for Elementary teaching. Candidates will be exposed to a variety of high leverage practices and science curricula with an emphasis on integrated instruction in a community context and meeting the unique needs of all learners.

    COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

    Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

    + Students will communicate meaningfully with a chosen audience while demonstrating critical thought.

    + Students will understand and employ the scientific method of inquiry to draw conclusions based on verifiable evidence.

    + Students will explain the impact of scientific theories, discoveries, or technological changes on society.

    + Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills in the analysis of scientific data.

    + Students will analyze and discuss behavioral or societal issues using theories and concepts from a social science perspective Technological Competency or Information Literacy

    + Students will demonstrate competency in office productivity tools appropriate to continuing their education.

    + Students will use critical thinking skills for computer based access, analysis, and presentation of information. Students will be able to examine how multicultural societies and people help engender a richer understanding of diverse life experience.

    CORE COURSE CONTENT

    • Introduction to Science Education

    • Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science

    • Assessment Practices in Elementary Science

    • Science Standards (Design Theory & Innovation; Next Generation Science Standards, InTASC)

    • Outreach and Resources (Field Trips, Environmental Science, Project Wild, Population Education)

     

    Specific Duties and Responsibilities

    SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Adjunct Faculty are instructional personnel whose services are contracted on a semester/term by semester/term basis. The adjunct faculty workload is limited to two course sections per semester/term, unless additional course sections are required to meet the needs of the students and/or College. Adjunct Faculty are paid by the credit hour. Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

     

    + Develop and manage syllabus and course materials – selecting and compiling tests, assignments, online discussion exercise that permit measurement of performance relative to standardized learning objectives.

    + Facilitate class instruction – administer evaluations of student performance based on course deliverables and course rubrics. All course grades will be posted on Blackboard Grade Center. Be prepared for class and meet with students on time and as scheduled or if teaching online to be responsive and “present” throughout the semester.

    + Comply with department, division, and college requirements – this includes using any required textbooks and online resources for a specific course, using Blackboard Grade Center, and completing required attendance reporting.

    + Respond promptly to grade determination – adjunct faculty should submit grades for any assignments, assessments, participation activities, etc. in a timely manner and within the required deadlines.

    + Input final grades and turn in final grades and attendance records to the Division by the end of semester deadline.

    OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY

    The most important overall responsibility of all RCBC employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students, members of the college community and the public. Adjunct faculty work with our Department Chairs, Coordinators, and Administrative team to ensure successful course delivery for our students.

    INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS:

    Assists college with student outcomes assessment efforts and/or Program assessments if need, by participating in the planning, data collection, and/or reporting as relates to course outcomes, program outcomes, general education outcomes, and developmental program outcomes.

    Minimum Qualifications

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    An advanced degree (i.e., Masters, EdD, PhD) from an accredited institution in Education, Special Education and/or elementary teaching certification; AND at least 3 years elementary science teaching experience.

     

    Additional Information

     

    Technology Tools, Blackboard LMS, and Webex Videoconferencing

     

    In order to enable Adjunct Faculty to be effective and to meet the requirements associated with relevant teaching conditions, RCBC has outlined 1) appropriate Technology Tools, 2) a minimum level of proficiency with the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) and remote delivery, and 3) Webex Videoconferencing resources.

     

    1) Technology Tools

     

    Adjunct Faculty should have access to a computer less than 6 years old and equipped with a webcam and microphone, as well as reliable high-speed internet service.

     

    2) Blackboard LMS

     

    Adjunct Faculty must participate in Blackboard training with a verified level of proficiency in the following two self-paced courses A) ‘Getting Started with Blackboard Learn’ and B) ‘Learn Teaching Essentials for Original’.

     

    3) Webex Videoconferencing

     

    Webex is RCBC’s accepted videoconferencing platform and allows for real-time instructor-student interactions and breakout sessions, for example. RCBC has created two interactive workshops, a maximum of one-and-a-half hours long, to address topics of interest to both beginner and advanced users. Recorded sessions will be continuously available for faculty viewing.
