    General Description

    General firefighting work in protection of life and property through combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; evaluation and treatment of patients at the advanced life support level; and maintaining fire department equipment and quarters. Work involves the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as heat, smoke, and cramped surroundings. Emergency medical services response at the advanced life support level is required.

    Treasure Island Fire Rescue is hiring one Firefighter/EMT; Paramedic preferred. Treasure Island. All testing must be completed before submitting an application which can be found at: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/mytreasureisland/.

     

    A current CPAT and FireTEAM test are required for being placed on the eligibility list. After scheduling the FireTEAM test, candidates can schedule a CPAT on the same website, www.nationaltestingnetwork.com. For this position, candidates must achieve a passing score on the video-based FireTEAM test at National Testing Network.

     

    Once employed, candidate will be required to obtain and maintain State of Florida Firefighter and State of Florida Paramedic Certification. A pre-employment medical examination, drug screening, background check, and polygraph will be conducted for candidates that are offered a job. Applicants must be non-user of tobacco products for at least one year prior to the date of application and shall not use tobacco products during employment; and upon hire must sign an affidavit attesting to such.

     

    Essential Job Functions

     

    + Responds to fire alarms with engine company.

    + Lays, connects, and advances hose lines, directs water streams.

    + Raises and climbs ladders.

    + Uses fire extinguishers, forcible entry tools, ropes, breathing apparatus, and other equipment. Makes forcible entry into buildings when necessary.

    + Ventilates building, opens walls and other structural components which impede the effective fighting of fire.

    + Assists in rescue of victims from burning buildings.

    + Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, removing water, and clearing debris. Drives and operates all fire department apparatus and equipment.

    + Prepares for pumping operations by seeing that hydrant connections are made and pumps water to fire at desired pressure. Monitors settings and operation of pumping apparatus during operation.

    + Responds to emergency medical calls.

    + Performs evaluation and treatment of patients at the advanced life support level. Uses portable ECG monitor/defibrillator, along with appropriate medications, in evaluation and treatment of EMS system patients.

    + Uses appropriate medical equipment and procedures for evaluation and treatment of patients as directed by the Office of the Medical Director, Pinellas County EMS.

    + Participates in fire and emergency medical training as directed by the fire department, State of Florida, and Pinellas County EMS.

    + Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.

    + Performs general maintenance of the fire station, apparatus, and equipment as directed.

    + Functions as a member of the Emergency Management team during declared and non-declared disasters or major events. May be required to work mandatory overtime for extended periods during disaster response operations.

    + Performs related work as required or directed.

    Minimum Qualifications, Licenses and Certifications

     

    + Must be eighteen years of age or older.

    + Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

    + Must have a valid Florida Driver's License.

    + Must meet all educational requirements of the State of Florida; Bureau of Fire Standards and Training; HRS Emergency Medical Services; and Pinellas County EMS.

    + May not use any form of tobacco products.

     

    Academy Certification : Yes, or willing to obtain at employer expense as a condition of employment.

     

    Necessary Certifications : State of Florida Firefighter II and State of Florida Paramedic

     

    Schooling Prior and Post Hiring : Applicant must possess or obtain Emergency Vehicle Operator's Certification (EVOC); AHA CPR-Healthcare Provider; AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); International Trauma Life Support (ITLS); and Pinellas County Certification as prescribed by the Office of Medical Director.

    Vision:

    + Far visual acuity: Far visual acuity shall be at least 20/30 binocular corrected with contact lenses or eyeglasses. Far visual acuity uncorrected shall be at least 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles. Successful long-term soft contact lens wearers shall not be subject to the uncorrected criterion.

    + Peripheral vision: Visual field performance without correction shall be 140 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye.

    + Required to pass the Titmus II Color Vision test (ability to distinguish between red, yellow and green).

    + Any recent or former history of ophthalmic surgery will require a medical clearance from the City of Treasure Island’s medical provider.

     

    Any other eye condition that results in a person not being able to perform the essential job functions of a Firefighter, NFPA 1582.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Environmental Conditions

     

    + Ability to gain knowledge of the street system and geography of the City and primary response area.

    + Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn and operate relatively complex equipment.

    + Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

    + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.

    + Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions.

    + Ability to learn a wide variety of firefighting and emergency medical skills and duties within a reasonable training period.

    + Coordination and physical strength sufficient to pass a physical abilities test.

    + Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing.

     

    Treasure Island Fire Rescue offers a generous benefits package including 100% paid employee-only coverage for health and dental insurance, basic life insurance, long-term disability, and AD&D policies. We also offer vision, AFLAC, health savings account, or flexible spending account.

     

    The retirement program is with Florida Retirement System (FRS) and requires a 3% employee contribution. Also available is an optional deferred compensation program with ICMA, Nationwide, or IAFF.

     

    Firefighters receive 144 hours of annual vacation leave for the first four years; plus 144 hours of annual sick leave; and ten paid holidays with 12 hours additional pay per holiday.
