DEFINITION
Under general direction, plans, develops, provides, and implements department-wide training programs in such areas as stress management, interpersonal communication, crisis intervention techniques, supervisory techniques, counseling skills, etc., within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for specifically-defined law enforcement management, supervisory, and/or other department personnel.
CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocable to this class report to an Assistant Director, Bureau Operations, Sheriff within the Psychological Services Bureau, and function as Industrial/Organizational Psychologists utilizing their motivational skills and practical experience in training and presenting various topics to large groups of first-line supervisory and managerial personnel within the department. Besides delivering a variety of in-service training programs, the incumbents also must utilize their familiarity with law enforcement issues to collaborate with department management in identifying targeted training needs or addressing specific areas of concern. In addition to functioning as Industrial/Organizational Psychologists and departmental trainers, incumbents also may be required to function as staff psychologists at the full professional level, including: providing counseling/evaluation services to department employees and their family members only in cases involving sensitive issues, providing 24-hour crisis intervention services to management, and providing human relations consultation services to department supervisors and management. These positions may be called upon to provide their services in the detection and non-medical treatment of stress, emotional and psychological problems, and crime-specific consultation; and with crisis intervention, negotiation, and the organizational diagnosis and development of therapies to solve a wide variety of psychological/psychiatric problems.
Essential Job Functions
Plans, develops, and implements comprehensive supervisory training programs in: the early identification and management of stress, improving interpersonal communication skills, providing crisis intervention, developing supervisory and counseling skills, etc.
Confers with departmental and bureau management staff to identify training needs in law enforcement services and to develop practical and effective strategies to address general and departmental-specific issues.
Presents recommendations to various levels of management on training needs, training programs available, and specific areas of interest; develops tailored training programs designed to meet identified needs.
Develops, prepares, and secures reading materials, training manuals, informational articles, charts, overheads, and other visual aids to assist in motivating audience and to ensure information is communicated in an effective and innovative manner.
Arranges for guest speakers and/or subject matter experts to participate in presentations; coordinates facility, date, time, and other scheduling considerations.
Provides consultative services to a large departmental client base by assessing and evaluating problems, diagnosing issues, and providing individual and group therapies.
Performs critical incident debriefings for departmental personnel involved in on/off duty shootings, dangerous or serious crime situations, traumatic incidents, etc.
Supplies emergency 24-hour on-call crisis intervention services; provides immediate professional psychological/psychiatric services under highly-stressful and/or dangerous situations; and consults, assists, and advises departmental management in approaches to crime-specific and/or law enforcement-related problems.
Serves as a member of a professional psychological services team; plans counseling and treatment programs in agreement and conjunction with departmental policies and procedures; provides on-site and follow-up counseling sessions in response to a wide variety of client needs.
Participates in professional staff conferences concerning psychological methods of assessment and techniques for treatment.
Researches topics and presents comprehensive training programs, workshops, and lectures on a variety of topics to department recruits, line staff, supervisors, management, and training officers.
Provides consultation and presents training to the Department's Peer Support and Addiction Control Programs; implements programs for the early detection and management of stress, smoking cessation, marital problems, weight control, etc.
Conducts psychological research, initiates studies, and provides research data to implement Departmental programs; collaborates on multi-disciplinary investigations
Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
A Doctorate degree*from an accredited or approved college or university in Psychology, Education Psychology, in Education with the field of specialization in counseling psychology or educational psychology, or in a field deemed equivalent by the licensing committee -AND- One year of experience in counseling or clinical psychology involving law enforcement issues -AND- One year of experience involving teaching, developing, or coordinating employee training programs in a large and complex public, private, or law-enforcement organization.
LICENSE
A license** to practice as a Psychologist as issued by the State of California, Board of Psychology- OR -A license to practice as a Psychologist as issued by any other state in the United States of America, provided that the license as issued by the State of California, Board of Psychology can be obtained within six months of appointment to the position.
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
