    Research Animal Resources is seeking a **_Surveillance Technician_** who supports Johns Hopkins animal research enterprise in the conduct of research services and veterinary care for rodents and other small animals used in a wide array of animal research studies. The position works closely with other veterinary technicians under the supervision of a clinical veterinarian.

    Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    + Surveillance/health monitoring program for rodents, including mice, rats, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and hamsters; rabbits, fish, owls, and bats.

    + Scheduling and coordination with other vet techs, care staff, and researchers.

    + Animal handling for the purposes of sample collection.

    + Euthanasia, necropsy and tissue harvest.

    + Processing and submitting of samples.

    + Collect survival blood, fecal, hair or other samples and submit for testing as directed by the veterinarian.

    + Prepare biological samples for microscopic evaluation, including fecal flotation, fur plucks, etc.

    + Microscopy for rodent ecto- and endo-parasites.

    + Database management.

    + Develop and implement relevant SOPs and other documents, upon direction and guidance of the veterinarian.

    + Record-keeping on Excel sheet, Word document, and other platforms.

    + Providing weekly colony reports to investigator/veterinarians.

    + Animal and supplies ordering.

    + Equipment maintenance.

    + Sample, inoculum, and equipment and supplies inventory.

    + Microbiologic monitoring program for sanitization efficacy.

    + Collect samples like swabs of various equipment.

    + Coordinate testing with husbandry and research personnel.

    + Analyze results.

    + Prepare reports.

    + Follow safety protocol for all personnel working in the facility.

    + Follow and help implement SOPs, guidelines, and other related documents.

    + Maintain strict infection control procedures.

    + As assigned by the veterinarian.

    _Secondary Responsibilities_

    + Respond to and manage clinical calls independently.

    + Consult with veterinarians, as necessary, for clinical case management.

    + Other duties, as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Associate's Degree in any field, but experience may substitute for a Degree.

    + Computer skills including working with basic spreadsheets, databases, word processing and web applications.

    + Ability to work independently and learn new skills and equipment.

    + Ability to precisely follow complex and detailed instructions.

    + Good articulation and communication skills.

    + Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Experience working with laboratory rodents and rabbits preferred.

    + One year working experience in laboratory animal science or animal research, especially working with rodents.

    + Associate's Degree or bachelor's Degree in veterinary technology, Animal Science or Biology.

    Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY (Commensurate w/exp.)

    The listed salary range represents the minimum and maximum Johns Hopkins University offers for this position, based on a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, market conditions, education, and internal equity.
