Department Information
The Spanish program housed in the Department of English and World Languages offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in Spanish, Spanish: K-12 Teacher Preparation Concentration, Spanish: Media & Entertainment Concentration, and Spanish: Translation Studies Concentration. The program also offers a Spanish minor, an Advanced Spanish for the Health Professions Certificate, and a Basic Spanish for the Health Professions Certificate. Finally, the program contributes to undergraduate general education courses.
Description of Job
This is a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position with the potential of summer teaching for additional compensation. Responsibilities include teaching 12 credit hours per semester with the possibility of reassigned time for research and/or service. Teaching assignments are based on department needs and candidate’s area of expertise. Courses may include Spanish from 100 to 400 levels in areas such as Beginning and Intermediate Spanish, Spanish as a Heritage Language, Conversation and Composition, Cultural Studies, Linguistics, and Spanish for the Professions. Courses may also include areas in Chicano Studies such as Chicano Literature.
The successful candidate will have a desire to teach and mentor students from various backgrounds and experiences. The person in this position should have a strong sense of collegiality and a willingness to participate in a unified and lively department. The candidate will maintain a program of research and scholarship in the discipline, and participate in service activities for the department, college, university and profession.
Primary Duties
Engage in teaching activities outlined in our faculty handbook (2.8.2.1) including but not limited to:
a. Teaching baccalaureate courses according to program needs and candidate’s area of expertise
b. Participating in curriculum development
c. Contributing to student success through support and mentoring, including meeting for office hours.
d. Participating in professional development activities in order to stay current within the discipline and utilize effective teaching methods, strategies and appropriate technologies.
Engage in scholarly or creative activities outlined in our faculty handbook (2.8.2.2) including but not limited to:
a. Developing and maintaining a sustained record of scholarship
b. Sharing expertise within the academic community
c. Including undergraduate and graduate students in research when possible and appropriate.
Participate in service activities outlined in our faculty handbook (2.8.2.3) including but not limited to:
a. Advising students to help them set academic goals, ensure appropriate coursework is completed, and provide referrals to appropriate student services,
b. Participating in department, college, and university meetings
c. Participating in recruitment and retention activities
d. Participating in convocation and commencement activities
e. Participating in department and university committees.
Salary Range
$54,300 to 60,000

Minimum Qualifications
+ Ph.D. in Spanish, Spanish literature, cultural studies, linguistics, or a related field by the position start date
+ Advanced Spanish Proficiency as per ACTFL standards
+ Demonstrated ability to relate to and commitment to serving various populations and learners
+ At least one year of college-level teaching experience
+ Experience working with various student and staff populations
+ Experience collaborating with other academic programs, student life, and various university offices
Preferred Qualifications
+ Proficiency in French, Italian or German
+ Training in ACTFL standards
+ Generalist with the ability to teach courses in Cultural Studies, Linguistics, Spanish for the Professions, and/or Translation and Interpretation
+ Expertise in Chicano Studies
+ Experience as a sole instructor teaching Spanish courses at the college level
+ Experience teaching Spanish as a Heritage Language
+ Experience teaching and/or designing face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses
+ Experience using and/or developing open educational resources
+ Experience using Blackboard and/or Canvas
