    **Pay Range:** $44.45 - $67.95 per hour

    Summary:

    The Bereavement Support Coordinator (BSC) coordinates, facilitates and manages a comprehensive support and crisis intervention program for families experiencing a death at Rush University Medical Center. This role educates and supports interdisciplinary team members in their care of dying patients and their families and provides continued support to grieving families as they transition to home post loss. This position reports to the AVP of Professional Nursing Practice and works with the Fetal and Neonatal Medicine Clinic, Palliative Care, Pediatric Palliative Care Services to provide seamless care to families receiving a diagnosis of a shortened life span. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

    Required Job Qualifications:

    • Earned master’s degree in nursing, social work, psychology or counseling.

    • Three years of clinical experience related to bereavement support in a tertiary care setting.

    • Completion of a certified training program recognized in the field of loss/support (RTS, SHARE, ADEC, ELNEC, EPEC).

    • Communication skills are required in order to lead, teach, and motivate others.

    • Ability to interact effectively with others in difficult situations.

    • Advanced presentation skills and program evaluation and planning experience Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams to achieve outcomes.

    • Strong assessment and counseling skills.

    • Experience with perinatal and adult grief processes.

    • Computer skills.

    • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to make decisions in time-sensitive situations.

    • The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine, specimens, images or reports.

    • Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and/or contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.

    Preferred Job Qualifications:

    • Current State of Illinois RN, social worker or counselor licensure.

    • Advanced certification for licensed discipline. Attainment and maintenance of advanced certification (ie. ADEC, palliative care, HPNA-CPLC, etc.).

    Physical Demands:

    • Work requires lifting or carrying objects 35-40lbs.

    • Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift.

    Responsibilities:

    EVIDENCE BASED INTERVENTIONS

    1. Develops and provides ongoing educational opportunities for staff to prepare them for crisis, death and bereavement issues.

    2. Implements tools for a successful bereavement support program including development of policy procedure and guidelines specific to crisis and loss, and bereavement care.

    RELATIONSHIPS AND CARING

    3. Develops, implements, and maintains a follow up outreach program to provide continued bereavement support to families during hospital stay and after discharge.

    4. Supports staff well-being through organized de-briefs, complex care conferences and other multi-disciplinary team approaches to process issues of concern, ethics and bereavement.

    CRITICAL THINKING

    5. Assesses and implements culturally competent, individualized plans of care for the complex patient, dying patient and the family in crisis.

    6. Develops and implements activities to support palliative care/ bereavement program as an outreach to the community.

    7. Evaluates bereavement program effectiveness through interpretation of clinical data, benchmarking comparison data, charitable giving and other quality monitoring data.

    TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

    8. Coordinates and facilitates a comprehensive bereavement support program for Rush University Medical Center.

    9. Mentors and educates staff from time of hire with ongoing education about crisis death and bereavement issues.

    10. Educates and supports staff members in their care of families in crisis.

    LEADERSHIP

    11. Works with leadership to identify needs for support and cooperative programs.

    12. Provides and supports educational opportunities in the community to promote services and competency in bereavement care to the Chicago region.

    13. Performs related duties as required.
