    + Introduction

     

    The DEEP Fisheries Division – CT Aquatic Resources Education (CARE) program has been teaching basic fishing courses and promoting environmental stewardship since 1986. In that time frame, over 250,000 citizens of CT have participated in fishing classes and events led by staff and certified volunteer fishing coaches. By utilizing interactive lessons and activities, PowerPoint presentations, and hands-on fishing trips participants are provided a foundation of basic fishing skills and a deeper connection and appreciation for CT natural resources.

    Roles and responsibilities include:

    + Seasonal Resource Assistants will represent the Fish with CARE program while leading classes and events focused on fish and fishing skills at the CARE education center (Killingworth) and both freshwater ponds and saltwater locations around CT. Seasonal staff will assist in volunteer engagement and be responsible for reporting of daily event activities. Maintenance and repair of fishing equipment and CARE education center is required.

    + 35 hours per week.

    + If selected for interview, applicants will be contacted by the divisions hiring supervisor anticipated for March/April of 2025.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    Ability to follow instructions.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    The ideal candidate would have college level course work and/or experience in one or more of the following: outdoor education, aquatic biology, ecology, fisheries biology or management, or environmental science. Applicants should have a background and strong interest in outdoor education and/or fisheries and be comfortable with public speaking engagements and working with volunteers. Ability and experience communicating with diverse audiences is desirable. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

    + Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

    + Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

    + Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

    + College training in a specific field.

    + Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

    + Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

    + Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
