    SUMMARY:

    Under general supervision, inspects, tests, and maintains relay equipment and performs other substation maintenance duties related to protection systems.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Inspects and tests relays and other substation equipment to ensure proper operation, utilizing such equipment as voltmeters, ammeters, phase angle meters, oscilloscopes and related electrical testing equipment

     

    Installs and maintains substation, transmission, and distribution Protection systems

     

    Performs routine maintenance on relays and substation equipment as required to maintain NERC compliance

     

    Trains and instructs less experienced personnel in techniques of relay maintenance and other duties by applying a full working knowledge of safe work procedures as outlined in the Safety Manual

     

    Available to perform on call work as necessary

     

    May serve as either dispatcher or switchman

     

    Properly creates "As Built" drawings for changes to protection systems

     

    Performs other duties as assigned

    COMPETENCIES:

    In-depth knowledge and understanding of electrical theory, transformer theory, math and drafting

     

    In-depth knowledge and understanding of safe and proper testing techniques

     

    In-depth knowledge and understanding of protection system construction and maintenance

     

    Ability to operate power tools and electrical testing equipment

     

    Ability to recognize and communicate hazardous conditions

    QUALIFICATIONS

    MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    High School Diploma or GED with three to five years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the discipline.

     

    College level course work in an engineering discipline or related vocational training preferred.

     

    Prior experience working in substation equipment test preferred

     

    where incumbent is required to operate machinery and/or equipment covered under the State Motor Carrier Act, the incumbent must meet requirements of Part 391 of the Act (Driver Qualification) before operating such equipment.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    Job requirements include meeting and maintaining regulatory standards required for the position including passing any screening required by the Company as required to meet NERC CIP regulations.

     

    Must also have and maintain a driving record that meets the Company's standards. Applicant must be able to receive TWIC from the TSA to access Texas City substations in Port facilities.

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and AC and DC schematics

     

    Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

     

    Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization

    Leads in installation and maintenance of substation, transmission, and distribution Protection systems

    Required to perform on call rotation

     

    May serve as dispatcher and/or switchman
