    Summary

    The Laboratory Transcriptionist is responsible for transcribing medical reports and other recorded data accurately using transcribing equipment and/or word processing software.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

     

    + Transcribe gross and microscopic descriptions of surgical reports, autopsy reports, letters, memorandums, and other correspondence

    + Prepare typed reports and surgical sheets for distribution according to departmental procedures

    + Prepare slides and blocks to be sent to the requesting physicians and/or healthcare facilities

    + Proofread all final reports to minimize re-types due to clerical error

    + Type correct patient information, history information, and type of specimen

    + Choose the correct pathology number to be typed into the report

    + Keep abreast of current Lab and Health Information System trends to maintain efficient work

    + Answer all calls for transcription, send and receive faxes, and distribute messages to the appropriate personnel

    + Receive pathology reports for physicians and nurses as needed

    + Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services

    + Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

    Education and Experience

     

    Minimum Required Education: High school diploma

     

    Preferred Education: Successful completion of an accredited business school program with courses in Medical Terminology

     

    Experience: One (1) or more years’ in a healthcare environment; qualified candidates must have a typing speed of 60+ words per minute
