Join Our Team at 6 South – Casual Professional Staff Nurse

6 South at UPMC Hamot is looking to add a Casual Professional Staff Nurse to our team! This 43-bed Cardiovascular, Renal Transplant, and Surgical Specialty Acute Care Unit provides post-op care for a wide range of patients, including those recovering from cardiothoracic, vascular, and gastric bypass surgeries. The unit also specializes in telemetry, oxygen monitoring, and offers care for kidney transplant and hepatobiliary surgery patients.

Purpose:

The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who sets the standard for care quality, providing direct patient care through independent judgment and collaboration with the healthcare team. This role is responsible for managing patient care and ensuring the best outcomes through leadership, partnership, and supervision, while also demonstrating a commitment to the nursing profession and community.

Responsibilities:

+ Build and maintain productive, positive relationships with patients, colleagues, and management, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to the team.

+ Apply the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment, ensuring individualized, holistic care for patients.

+ Use critical thinking to assess clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues, and communicate effectively with the care team to address patient needs.

+ Maintain thorough, accurate documentation to enhance communication and promote quality care.

+ Incorporate evidence-based practices and organizational goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.

+ Educate patients, families, and staff, providing clear guidance for care transitions and empowering learning.

+ Participate in quality improvement initiatives and identify opportunities to enhance patient care and satisfaction.

+ Engage in professional development, contributing to shared governance and helping drive change for continuous improvement in patient care and the practice environment.

+ Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic care setting, responding to changes and challenges in the healthcare environment.

+ The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.

+ They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

+ Minimum 1 year experience.

+ BSN preferred.

+ Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

+ Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

+ Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

+ Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.

+ Mobility and visual manual dexterity.

+ Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients. **Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**

+ UPMC approved national certification preferred.

+ Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

+ CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

+ Registered Nurse (RN)
