    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Supervising Attorney will further LEAP’s mission of providing clients with uniquely holistic community-based housing representation in all facets of the eviction process, including housing court eviction proceedings, NYCHA administrative proceedings, and affirmative litigation actions (HP actions, illegal lockout proceedings, etc). The Supervisory Attorney’s job responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

     

    + Participate in the leadership of the Program’s development

    + Help set substantive team goals and priorities

    + Coordinate “Know Your Rights” and Community Engagement Workshops

    + Provide direct and indirect supervision and oversight to LEAP staff attorneys, and other staff as needed

    + Provide individual case and motion review with supervisees

    + Provide in-court (remotely or in person) supervision to staff attorneys as assigned or necessary

    + Assist with updating of the Program’s Community Education and Know Your Rights workshop materials

    + Coordinate and conduct trainings and seminars, including Know Your Rights workshops to tenants and community residents on their housing rights

    + Assist other supervisors in continuing to develop and identify additional training programs to enhance staff and attorney knowledge and development

    + Help with the global identification and strategizing of the Program’s Community Organizing efforts

    + Identify, pursue, and act as a liaison with other community stakeholders (i.e. organizations, coalitions, pro bono firms, and private public interest attorneys)

    + Identify opportunities to develop strong partner relationships with entities that can assist with the Program’s development

    + Assist staff with strategy, trial preparation, testimony, and be available to second seat attorneys in trials and hearings (i.e. non-payment, holdovers, and HP/repairs)

    + Assist with the production of a variety of advocacy materials for expert and lay audiences

    + Maintaining a light caseload

    + Assist with the ongoing training, management, and evaluation of the staff

    + Other duties as required

    COMPETENCIES

    + Be admitted to and in good standing with the New York State Bar

    + Have five (5) or more years of experience as a civil litigation attorney, preferably in tenant-landlord advocacy, with at least 2 years in housing court

    + Have at least two (2) years of supervisory or mentoring experience, preferably supervising attorneys

    + Have and exhibit excellent litigation skills (i.e. through: pleadings, orders to show cause, motions to dismiss, defending and demanding depositions, oral arguments, and trial and/or appellate experience)

    + Computer proficiency sufficient to undertake legal research and draft legal documents

    + Have served as lead counsel on three (3) or more trials

    + Have the ability and interest in becoming familiar with all aspects of housing advocacy and tenant-landlord litigation
