    Advertised Job Summary:

    We seek an outstanding individual who uses innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to measure, interpret, and predict physical changes in coastal regions. Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to, sea level rise/land subsidence, dynamic topography, tectonic impacts on coastlines, hurricane effects, coastal erosion, sediment dynamics, anthropogenic impacts on landscapes, and future sustainability at the coast. Candidates may apply any combination of geological, geophysical, or geodetic approaches to the study of coastal areas and their environmental implications.

     

    The successful candidate will complement, strengthen, and diversify the SEOE’s research, and will direct an active, externally funded research program. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment (ABDs considered). Appointment at the associate level will be considered for applicants with strong and sustained records of research funding and publication per university policy. Teaching responsibilities of one course per semester will include a rotation of an undergraduate course for non-science majors, an undergraduate course for SEOE majors, and a graduate-level course in the candidate’s area of specialization. The successful candidate will also play an administrative role through committee service within the unit.

     

    The SEOE is a multidisciplinary unit within the College of Arts and Sciences, with academic programs in Environment and Sustainability (Environmental Science and Environmental Studies), Geology and Geophysics, and Marine Science. The unit consists of approximately 600 undergraduate students, more than 60 graduate students, and 35 faculty representing research areas ranging from physical to social sciences, including marine, environmental and geological sciences. The SEOE houses excellent analytical facilities (https://www.sc.edu/study/colleges\_schools/artsandsciences/earth\_ocean\_and\_environment/research/facilities\_resources/index.php) , including Stable Isotope Laboratories, Radioisotope & Marine Sediments Laboratory, and The Center for Elemental Mass Spectrometry. The SEOE has space and support to host computer clusters, and the university hosts The Hyperion supercomputing facility. In addition, the candidate is encouraged to consider research opportunities within their area of expertise that would leverage the infrastructure available at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory (https://sc.edu/study/colleges\_schools/artsandsciences/baruch\_institute/facilities/marine\_field\_lab/index.php) (located on the edge of the North Inlet Estuary and adjacent Winyah Bay).
