Principal Objective/Role Overview:
TheCommunity Liaison for Migrant Familieswill work to support asylum-seeking families at shelter community locations. The role is central to fostering a safe, nurturing environment for migrant families while helping them navigate their transition to life in New York City. The Community Liaison will collaborate with local organizations, schools, and city agencies to connect families to critical resources, provide tangible support, and facilitate community engagement and advocacy.
This position requires regular on-site work at local hotels (3 days per week, 9 am–5 pm) and travel to other community locations as needed.
Job Responsibilities:
Family Engagement & Support:
+ Build trusting relationships with migrant families to understand their needs and strengths.
+ Provide advocacy, guidance, and referrals for essential services, including education, mental health, healthcare, housing, and legal assistance.
+ Offer tangible resources, such as strollers, diapers, gift cards, school devices, and clothing.
Program Coordination:
+ Collaborate with the Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers (HERRC) team, Stewart and other local hotels and staff, and local schools to ensure asylum-seeking and local families in the shelters receive appropriate support.
+ Assist with planning and hosting events, such as back-to-school drives, baby showers, and wellness activities.
+ Serve as the main point of contact for community organizations, schools, and city partners.
Advocacy & Education Support:
+ Advocate for migrant families' access to education and collaborate with Department of Education (DOE) representatives to facilitate school enrollment.
+ Partner with schools and community programs to address needs such as school supplies, uniforms, and educational resources.
Community Integration & Cultural Orientation:
+ Help families acclimate to U.S. customs, NYC requirements, and community resources.
+ Organize workshops and activities to promote social integration and cultural adjustment for families.
Crisis Intervention:
+ Provide guidance and support for families experiencing crises, including domestic violence.
+ Develop and implement safety plans and connect families to appropriate resources for financial and emotional assistance.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
+ Engage school leaders, community organizations, and parent associations to co-design family-centered programming.
+ Regularly meet with local partners to identify community assets, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
Data Collection & Reporting:
+ Track outreach efforts, engagement outcomes, and family needs to ensure effective service delivery.
+ Provide detailed reports on program outcomes and community feedback.
Qualifications
Position Qualifications:
+ Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, or a related human services field; master’s degree preferred.
+ Bilingual in English/Spanish strongly preferred.
+ Experience working with migrant populations or vulnerable communities.
+ Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
+ Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other digital tools.
+ Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
+ Passion for enhancing the quality of life for families in need.
Salary & Compensation:
+ Base Salary or Hourly Rate: $28.85/hour
+ FLSAStatus: Non-Exempt
