The EMSA (Enrollment Management): Career Services has an outstanding opportunity for a Assistant Director, Career Services to join their team.** **POSITION PURPOSE
Reporting to the Director of Career Services, the Assistant Director oversees the daily operations of Career Services, implementing departmental strategies, operating procedures, and policies. This role emphasizes collaboration with academic departments, faculty, advisors, and campus partners to integrate career development into the curriculum, developing new resources and maintain services and programming. The Assistant Director provides supervision and leadership to the professional coaching staff and assumes senior leadership and decision-making authority in the Director's absence.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a member of the Career Services coaching team, this position assists in planning and implementing student programs, events, and services. Using discretion and autonomy, the Assistant Director collaborates with faculty, academic advisors, and other administrators to incorporate Career Services into the broader campus community and academic curriculum. This position also partners with student leaders and campus stakeholders to enhance the co-curricular student experience. This position collects, analyzes, and shares department data collaborating with campus stakeholders to assess and improve student success. The Assistant Director provides career coaching to graduate students, prospective graduate students, and alumni, and manages the day-to-day operations of Career Services, including programming and appointment scheduling.
Campus Collaboration:
• Collaborate with academic programs and Enrollment Management to integrate Career Services into students' experiences.
• Strategically engage with campus partners, using student need and engagement data to create scaffolded curricular student support.
• Serve as an academic liaison, work with faculty and advisors on targeted programming and career content to integrate into the curriculum.
• Build, maintain and foster relationships with campus partners to provide innovative student support services.
• Create and conduct classroom presentations and workshops.
• Direct Career Services diversity initiatives, collaborations, and programming.
• Act as a resource and liaison with other university departments and student leaders regarding opportunities for partnership and program development.
• Represent the Director in relation to student services, strategic planning, employer engagement, and serve on committees across campus.
Department Management & Supervision:
• Under the general direction of the Director of Career Services, actively participate in planning and implementing strategic initiatives to improve programming and services for students.
• Manage the day-to-day operations of Career Services coaching staff, ensuring coverage during business hours.
• Create, implement, and administer operational procedures and policies.
• Recruit, hire, train, onboard, supervise, conduct performance appraisals, and mentor professional staff.
• Communicate proactively and effectively with team members to manage competing priorities, short-term requests, and long-term goals.
• Stay informed on best practices and network with colleagues via professional associations, groups, and committees.
• Keep the Director of Career Services apprised of emerging or ongoing issues in areas of responsibility.
• Serve as the lead professional staff member, responding to departmental queries and resolving concerns.
Career Coaching & Teaching:
• Assist students in defining career options, identifying application procedures and strategies, and developing and refining job search materials (including salary negotiation and personal statements).
• Provide career coaching to graduate students, prospective graduate students, and alumni.
• Serve as instructor of record for academic success courses such as Career Exploration 1 – 3 times a year. This course(s) promotes academic success by facilitating students’ engagement in their own learning. Specifically, the purpose of this course(s) is to ensure that students are able to learn how to identify career options through research, critical thinking and reflection, develop communication skills in networking and informational interviewing, identify strengths, abilities, values, and interests. And develop job search tools. Teaching this course is a part of this position’s regular duties, does not authorize excess compensation, does not require nor confer a faculty title, and is subject to UWHR policies (e.g., student complaint resolution).
Evaluation and Assessment:
• Lead program assessment, quarterly data collection, evaluation, and management related to services and program goals.
• Collaborate with campus partners on strategic and consolidated data-gathering and sharing.
• Use established principles of educational assessment to develop valid and reliable instruments that assess student learning, satisfaction, and evaluation of programs and services.
• Lead department data management, collection, and analytics.
• Recommend and implement program modifications based on results.
• Keep abreast of market trends and stakeholder interests.
External Partnerships:
• Represent UW Bothell to industry partners, Washington career centers (including UW Seattle and Tacoma), and the UW community at large with the Director.
• Develop and steward alumni connections for targeted employer outreach, building student networks, and programming.
• Assist with Career Services and Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs activities, events, programs, and other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Master's degree in education, Business, Liberal Arts or a related field.
• A minimum of two years of experience in one or more of the following areas: university career services, corporate recruitment, career counseling/coaching, human resources, or recruiting.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Experience in supervising and mentoring.
• Demonstrated experience working with a diverse community and a commitment to equity and social justice.
• Proven ability to develop, collaborate, and maintain partnerships with other services and departments.
• Demonstrated ability to train and present to a broad range of audiences.
• Highly organized, capable of working under pressure, and able to work independently with exceptional reliability, productivity and efficiency.
• Demonstrated experience in planning, coordinating, and executing programs or events effectively.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS
• Experience in project management and event planning.
• Proven success in launching new programs and services.
• Knowledge or experience in curriculum development and instruction.
• Certification and knowledge in assessment interpretation (e.g., MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory, StrengthsFinder).
• Experience in supervising, developing, and mentoring professional staff.
• Experience with distance learning delivery.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
• The Assistant Director of Career Services is expected to attend major student activities and events both on campus and in the local community.
• This role involves regular and frequent contact with students, alumni, faculty, staff, administrators, and external partners.
• The work schedule often fluctuates due to after-hours activities, meetings, and events, requiring occasional evening and weekend commitments (including move in day and commencement) throughout the year.
