    UNIT: Children's Services (ACS)

     

    JOB TITLE: One (1) Summer Intern

     

    CONTROL CODE: DSS Intern-25-01

    SUMMARY:

    The Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is the City government's chief financial agency. OMB's staff of analysts and experts assembles and oversees the Mayor’s expense and capital budgets, which fund the services and activities of approximately 90 City agencies and entities.

     

    The Social Services Task Force at the New York City Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) oversees expense budgets for the City’s social services agencies, as well as the financing for related capital projects. These agencies are the Administration for Children's Services, Department of Social Services (Human Resources Administration and Department of Homeless Services), Department for the Aging, and Department of Youth and Community Development. Within OMB’s Social Services Task Force, the ACS Unit is responsible for monitoring the expense and capital budgets of the Administration for Children's Services (ACS). Ongoing ACS Unit responsibilities include forecasting and monitoring caseload and expenditure trends in key areas, such as Adoption, Foster Care, and Juvenile Justice, analyzing the impact of State and Federal budget on City social service programs, and evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of programs.

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    OMB's ACS unit is seeking a passionate and detail-oriented intern to assist with the analysis of budget and funding trends for ACS-run crucial services to children and families in New York City. This includes services related to foster care, adoption, community-based prevention programs for at-risk youth, and detention/detention alternatives for youth involved in the juvenile justice system. As an intern, you will play a vital role in helping us review and assess historical trends in ACS's and NYC's broader financial landscape. Your work will involve tracking how budget allocations, funding, and policy changes impact ACS programs over time. Specifically, you will: Responsibilities: - Analyze ACS’s budget and funding data: Review budget allocations and identify trends in funding and resource utilization. - Evaluate external factors: Assess how changes in legislation, demand for services, and the outlook of the NYC budget influence service funding and program size. - Prepare reports and presentations: Produce data-driven summaries that illustrate the relationship between funding adjustments and service outcomes. - Support recommendations: Help identify areas for improvement in funding strategy and assist in developing actionable recommendations to ensure the financial sustainability of services.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in gaining experience in city budgeting and NYC social service programs for youth and families.

    Skills:

    - Strong interest in public policy, budgeting, and social services, particularly for at-risk youth and families

     

    - Data analysis in Excel

     

    - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly

     

    - Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple tasks with accuracy

     

    - Strong analytical and project management skills.

     

    - Strong sense of curiosity

     

    The ideal candidate is able to meet deadlines under time constraints and manage multiple competing priorities.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Graduate interns must be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program. Candidates should have strong analytical, quantitative, research and communication skills. Additionally, candidates must be proficient in MS Word and Excel

     

    To participate in the OMB Summer Internship Program, graduate students must be currently enrolled or accepted into a graduate program.

    Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
