    Job Description

    The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets, attacking the scourge of illegal dumping, and clearing snow and ice. The Department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms, 705 salt spreaders, and several dozen bike lane operations machines. Under the Adams Administration, the Department is aggressively cleaning more parts of the City than ever before, including over 1,000 long-ignored areas spread across every neighborhood. With the highest wintertime uniformed headcount in 20 years, DSNY is more equipped than ever to remove snow and ice from the approximately 19,000 lane-miles of City streets.

     

    The Bureau of Community Affairs (BCA) serves as a representative of the DSNY in various settings such to address elected officials, community boards, Business Improvement Districts (BIDS), businesses, civic associations, and the public. In addition, BCA is committed to increasing the community engagement by promoting DSNY programs, services, and proper practices, overseeing the DSNY’s 311 agency comments and general correspondence, and monitors agency service requests for services and complaints while maintaining the DSNY’s interaction with 311.

     

    Reporting to the Unit Supervisor, the Community Coordinator will provide program support for the Customer Service Unit within the Bureau of Community Affairs. With latitude for independent initiative and judgment, the Community Coordinator will perform responsible work related to Agency correspondence/community services/community affairs and/or community–based programs and initiatives. The selected candidate will perform professional complex and responsible work including but not limited to: community affairs related correspondence, communications and outreach functions to respond to community groups, community residents, elected officials and to maintain and enhance partnerships with communities, local organizations, community residents, etc.

    The responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

    - Communicating in an organized, courteous and effective manner with residents and colleagues in writing and/or in person and via various modes of communication (letter, email, telephone, website, social media, presentations, etc.);

     

    - Providing information and direction to residents regarding Sanitation services and programs. Reading and/or listening carefully to constituent problems and adapt communication methods to respond to different audiences. Asking appropriate questions to clarify reason(s) for contact and information and provide appropriate solution to constituent’s problem/needs;

     

    - Representing the Bureau/Agency at community, elected official and inter/intra-agency meetings; leading sanitation-related presentations, communicating DSNY initiatives, explaining/communicating DSNY policy and procedures;

     

    - Assisting with community engagement, educational outreach efforts, and working on special projects handled by the Bureau;

     

    - Utilize various City and agency systems to assist in processing 311 and agency direct service requests;

     

    - Assist in preparation of reports, briefings, analyzing and reviewing programs, community problems and issues, and making recommendations on policies and programs as needed;

    Qualifications

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

    2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

    3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

    Salary Min: $ 59,116.00
