Job Summary and Qualifications
The Surgical First Assist will provide technical assistance to the Physician and Registered Nurse in surgical procedures related to the operation of the surgical suite. You will carry out the functions that will assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. You will function as a scrub when not assisting in the Surgical Technologist role.
+ You will demonstrate knowledge of surgical techniques, both routine and specialized, and apply the knowledge appropriately to develop and improve skills in assisting the surgeon
+ You will exhibit knowledge and skill in applying the principles of aseptic technique and infection control
+ You will demonstrate ability to use all equipment and supplies necessary for surgical procedures, as well as ability to retract, suction, irrigate, apply pressure and assist in homeostasis by use of assorted sponges in the surgical field
+ You will offer assistance to colleagues in the main OR, cardiovascular OR, and other areas of surgical services
+ You will recognize surgical hazards and initiate appropriate corrective and preventative action
+ You will provide homeostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as directed by the surgeon
+ You will provide surgical exposure through the appropriate instruments, retractors, suction, sponging techniques and tissue handling
+ You will place sutures and drains, and perform wound closure as directed by the surgeon
+ You may introduce instruments through established trocar sites under the direct supervision of the surgeon, and may perform secondary trocar insertion during laparoscopy procedures
+ You will not perform first trocar insertion in any circumstance
What qualifications you will need:
Experience
+ Minimum of 1 year of previous experience as a Certified First Assist
Education
+ Associate’s degree
Licenses and Certifications
+ Current certification as a Certified First Assist
+ Current certification as a Surgical Technologist
+ Current Basic Life Support certification
