*Executive Director, School of Medicine Facilities Planning and Operations (SOM)* *The University of Maryland School of Medicine (SOM)*was chartered in 1807 as the first public medical school in the United States. SOM is dedicated to providing excellence in biomedical education, basic and clinical research, quality patient care and service to improve the health of the citizens of Maryland and beyond. *Job Summary:* *The Executive Director of Facilities Planning and Operations*at the University of Maryland School of Medicine plays a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless operation and strategic planning of our facilities. This executive-level leader is responsible for all aspects of School of Medicine facilities management, including project planning, building design and construction, maintenance, and operations within our seventeen campus buildings. This is done in coordination with offices at the campus level of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The role requires an understanding of architecture, mechanical engineering, space management, and design for research and educational space. The Executive Director will work closely with various departments and centers to ensure that our facilities meet the highest standards of safety, functionality, and aesthetics. This position involves managing renovation projects, leading strategic space planning initiatives, and ensuring the efficient operation of our facilities. The Executive Director will also be responsible for participating in developing and implementing policies and procedures to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our facilities. The Executive Director reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration. There is a team of three staff who support this role. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in facilities management, excellent leadership skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland. * *Job Responsibilities:* *Facilities Operations of the School of Medicine* */Design Planning and Construction (40%)/* * Plans with end user and then monitors school renovations and major construction projects; reviews materials and methods; questions conflicts and changes. * Manages client issues in relation to construction decisions and preferences. * Ensures compliance with intended results, codes, regulations, and required standards. * Oversees all research space and research space needs in the SOM. Space could be leased. * Serves as the SOM’s primary contact person on space data and reports information. * Coordinates the overall space master planning needs in the SOM. * Coordinates with upper-level administrators and other directors, on a regular basis, in consultation on projects and timelines. * Advises and assists the Dean, Vice Dean, department chairs, and program heads on programmatic issues involving matters related to facilities. * Serves as the primary person to coordinate SOM renovation and major construction projects. * Oversees and coordinates the completion of all renovation projects with SOM, Facilities Management, and contracted personnel. * Represents the SOM in space and facilities meetings and planning sessions. * Works with external, local, and national institutions and agencies, on space and facilities management proposals and projects. * Directs and develops the planning and development of renovation and capital project scopes for submission to Facilities Management. * At times, coordinates the completion of research grant applications and proposals for construction and renovation of research space. * Coordinates and directs SOM space management and planning with UPI and UMMC. * Coordinates the acquisition of services, equipment and materials for renovation and construction projects with the Office ofProcurement and Supplies. */Facilities Maintenance and Operations (40%)/* * Oversees and coordinates day-to-day operations and maintenance of all SOM facilities. * Monitors work order request, outages, reviews billable work and requests for small (non-bid) projects. * Coordinates and assists with EVS services when necessary. * Provides support and guidance to the SOM on all space management issues in the recruitment of new chairs, division heads, and faculty members. * Coordinates and evaluates SOM existing research space needs to develop future plans for effective space utilization. * Coordinates and monitors the Environmental and Safety Program in the SOM. * Coordinates and monitors security in and around SOM Buildings. This is done in partnership with the campus police and security personnel. * Works directly with new faculty recruits to understand research-based facility needs and assess costs/plan to achieve. * Coordinates events and projects with fire marshal. * Collaborates on sustainability projects in the SOM. /*General (20%)*/ * Advises Dean and other senior leadership in the SOM. * Recruits, supervises, and mentors office staff. * Maintains liaison with Campus Offices and Programs. *Education:*Bachelor's in Architecture, Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical) or a bachelor's degree in another field but position related experience in the field of construction management. *Experience:*Ten (10) years of experience in project design, management, implementation, and assessment; and construction of institutional or commercial building projects. Including five (5) years' experience in construction, design, and/or technical specialization, including two (2) years of supervision of trades for those positions central to large capital projects. Requires training related to occupational safety and health and environmental compliance. *Supervisory Experience:*Five (5) years direct management experience. *Certification/Licensure:*Licensed Architect, Licensed professional Engineer or CMAA Certified Construction Manager preferred. * Knowledge of evaluations, assessment processes, research, and space issues, and understands of the complex structure of an academic health science center. * Strong interpersonal, analytical, decision-making, oral and written communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with various constituents. * Strong supervisory and organizational skills. * Must have ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects to meet position objectives. *Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:* Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to support a mission and strategic vision.
