    Description

    The Vice President of Risk Management is responsible for overseeing all aspects of risk management at Emory Healthcare (EHC). This includes identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks to the organization, its patients, employees, and assets. The role involves developing and implementing strategies to reduce risk exposure, ensure regulatory compliance, improve patient safety, and promote a culture of safety across the organization.

     

    The VP of Risk Management will work closely with other executives, department leaders, and clinical staff to establish a risk-conscious environment that minimizes potential liability, addresses patient care quality concerns, and protects the organization from legal and financial exposure.

    Reports to Chief Quality Officer, Emory Healthcare

    1. **Risk Identification and Assessment:**

    2. Lead the identification of risks across the organization, including clinical, operational, regulatory, financial, reputational, and technological risks

    3. Conduct regular risk assessments and collaborate with department leaders to evaluate the effectiveness of existing risk management strategies

    4. Identify and address trends across the organization that should be escalated for risk reduction strategies

    5. **Risk Mitigation and Strategy Development:**

    6. Develop and implement comprehensive risk management programs, policies, and procedures designed to address identified risks and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., HIPAA, Joint Commission standards)

    7. Work with senior leadership to prioritize and manage risks, ensuring that risk management efforts align with organizational goals

    8. **Risk Management Improvement:**

    9. Lead risk management mitigation initiatives to promote patient safety across the health system

    10. Ensure adherence to best practices in patient safety, risk reporting, and corrective action planning

    11. Work with system safety and clinical performance excellence leaders to promote identification of issues and spread of solutions

    12. **Regulatory Compliance and Legal Oversight:**

    13. Ensure compliance with all relevant healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, OSHA, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and other state and federal mandates

    14. **Claims Management:**

    15. Oversee the organization's professional liability claims, ensuring that appropriate steps are taken to resolve disputes, minimize liabilities, and avoid litigation

    16. Oversee the investigation, documentation, and resolution of all professional liability/medical malpractice, and general liability claims

    17. Coordinate with Office of Insurance and Office of General Counsel, where appropriate, as it relates to all other claims

    18. Collaborate with legal counsel, insurance carriers, and outside experts to manage risk exposure

    19. Collaborate with Office of Insurance for visibility and alignment on Emory's Insurance Program

    20. **Training and Education:**

    21. Develop and implement risk management training programs for staff at all levels, emphasizing safety protocols, patient care practices, and risk awareness

    22. Ensure that all staff are regularly updated on changes in risk management policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices

    23. **Incident Response and Crisis Management:**

    24. Lead the organization's response to critical incidents and major risk events, including natural disasters, public health emergencies, and large-scale patient safety concerns

    25. Develop and maintain crisis management plans and communication strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and the organization

    26. **Reporting and Analytics:**

    27. Monitor, analyze, and report on risk-related trends and incidents, providing actionable insights to senior leadership and board members

    28. Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of risk management efforts and patient safety initiatives

    29. **Collaboration and Leadership:**

    30. Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, providing input and guidance on risk-related matters

    31. Partner with other department heads (e.g., clinical, legal, finance) to ensure a unified approach to risk management across the organization

    32. Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and transparency throughout the organization.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + A master's degree in healthcare administration, business administration (MBA), or a related field

    + Minimum of 10 years of experience in healthcare risk management, patient safety, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role

    Preferred Qualifications Certifications:

    + Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) preferred

    + Other relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Risk Manager, Certified Insurance Counselor) are a plus

    Skills and Competencies:

    + Proven experience in managing complex risk management programs in an integrated complex healthcare setting

    + Strong knowledge of healthcare laws, regulations, and industry standards related to risk management, patient safety, and legal compliance

    + Analytical Skills: Ability to identify risks, assess their impact, and develop strategies to mitigate them. Strong ability to analyze trends and data

    + Leadership: Proven leadership capabilities, with the ability to inspire, mentor, and develop a high-performing risk management team

    + Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels of the organization

    + Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, especially in high-stress or crisis situations

    + Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including clinical, legal, compliance, and executive teams

    + Patient-Centered Focus: A strong commitment to improving patient safety, care quality, and overall health outcomes
